Witherington (The Jesus Quest) surveys the different views of the life and work of Jesus that are found in the early writings of Christianity, particularly in the New Testament. He opens his study by noting that each event in the life of Jesus often merits its own Christological response, e.g., "Birth Christology" or "Resurrection Christology." He then goes on to examine the idea of the Messiah in Judaism and concludes that many early Jews did not expect a Messiah in the sense that Christians later came to call Jesus their Messiah. The remaining chapters explore, through detailed exegesis, the development of Christological ideas in pre-Pauline Christianity, the writings of Paul, the synoptic Gospels, the book of Acts, the writings of John and the general epistles. Through his study, Witherington comes to several conclusions. First, he says, much of New Testament Christology identifies Christ with God, and that this is the case from the earliest Christological hymn (Philippians 2:6-11) through the end of the first century. Second, Christological ideas do not appear to move in an evolutionary fashion from primitive to more sophisticated. Finally, argues Witherington, some Christological ideas proved more serviceable than others when Christianity opened its mission to the Gentiles. Though Witherington's readings of the various New Testament writings are valuable, his unremarkable book covers little ground that hasn't been covered better and more completely by Edward Schillebeeck's Jesus and Christ.

Ben Witherington III is Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky, and is on the doctoral faculty at St. Andrews University, Scotland. In a recent review posted, November 16, 2005, by Ben Witherington of Anne Rice's 'Christ the Lord - Out of Egypt,' he wrote, "Rice gets to critique liberal Jesus scholars, amongst others. Rice also tells us the story of her conversion and return to Roman Catholicism, which entailed a return to investigate questions which had haunted her all her life -how did Christianity actually come about? ...I would give myself utterly to the task of trying to understand Jesus himself and how Christianity emerged."
To the reconverted Roman Catholic novelist quest, Witherington anticipated statement, seven years earlier was, "Where did all of this vast array of christological thinking come from? Ultimately, we have argued, it in many cases goes back to Jesus himself, or to the earliest Jewish Christian followers of Jesus."

Many faces of the Christ:
The renowned Bible scholar explains, in Gospel precedence; NT Worship records, Pauline epistles, Synoptics, Acts of Early Church, Johannine Corpus, and ultimately the General epistles concludes on the evidence of the wonder deeds, and teachings of the historical Jesus, and what his disciples thought of him. The Christ, whose light shone in radiant teachings and great acts by Jesus, and expressed in his multiple witness, are reviewed and their christologies analyzed and evaluated by Witherington.
Witherington scope in his New Testament survey, of the different views of the life and work of Jesus, recorded in the early Christian writings, is in particular exploring the NT christologies. His coverage is different, in scope and audience, than many christology scholars, including the extensive Schillebeeck's 'Jesus and Christ,' and is more concerned with replying a very central question, "Does the New Testament calls Jesus God?"

Christology in Review:
In a scholarly essay, in disregard of Fredriksen who pioneered the development of the Christological Myth; 'From Jesus to Christ,' and Cohen who follows suit in a line of non believing academics, he comes to the very contrary conclusion. Professor Cohen of Brown University states about the Christ, "you would say he was a magician, a charlatan, a faker, a pretender, just a cheap trickster", while Dr. Fredriksen of Boston University alleges that, "we might think that the attribution of apocalyptic hope to Jesus came from a level after his lifetime, or may be was the editorial decision of the evangelist"
In his well informed treatment, without trying to reconcile the various witness, Witherington comes to the same conclusions of early Jews and Jewish Christians, predicating a very high Christology, including Christ theos, very early on. In his final apology he writes, "Any adequate discussion of the growth and development of New Testament Christologies will have to reckon with the probability that some Christians understood that they took to be fuller implications of the Christ-event sooner than others,"

Bible scholar Witherington, Ph.D., from the U. of Durham, England, is Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary, Kentucky. Witherington has taught at Vanderbilt University, Duke Divinity School and has written over thirty books, including The Jesus Quest and The Paul Quest, both of which were selected as top biblical studies works by Christianity Today. Now considered one of the world top evangelical scholars, is an elected member of SNTS, the prestigious society of New Testament studies.

a solid study

this is a great little introduction to new testament christology. witherington covers all of the bases: the pre-Christian era, the christology of Jesus, each book in the new testament, and the early patristic evidence.
placing his study firmly within the context of early Judaism, witherington concludes that the christology offered by the New Testament actually exceeds that of the ante-nicene period. his dealing with the evidence is always fair, and he never overplays his hand. witherington is one of the finest new testament scholars of our day (particularly in the area of Wisdom christology), and this is a fantastic introduction to his work.

Ben Witherington is a very good interpreter of the Bible. He makes the issues come to life. This is a Christology that even the experienced Christian will appreciate. He doesn't simply take the titles of Jesus and develop them as many Christologies do. Instead, he looks at the many presentations of Jesus in situations and uses that as a foundation. I haven't finished the book and will add more when I have completed the read.

Tickle’s work as the religion editor for Publishers Weekly provides an uneven but occasionally useful snapshot of religious life in the mid-1990s as illustrated by books sales. Tickle surveys what she describes as “the sacred,” “this wonderful country of the subjective world where we learn to love each other beyond judgmentalism or creeds” (12). In Chapter Two, she provides some historical orientation to the reality of the Baby Boomer’s worldview. Chapter Three, the most interesting and useful part of the book, breaks down the popular religious bestsellers into four categories: 1) Near-death experiences, angels, and aliens; 2) “books of ancient wisdom,” cf. Karen Armstrong, Crossan and Spong, and Jesus Seminar, renewed interest in Judaism and Kabbalah, etc., Native American spirituality, “Goddess” religions, and Buddhism; 3) self-help, and 4) Religious fiction. It would be interesting to do a similar survey at this point in time, including a qualitative survey of internet consumption. The rest of the book meanders confusingly between trying to imply what these bestsellers mean religious consumers are seeking, an attempted definition of religion, and interludes about Tickle’s experience with such figures as Desmond Tutu and John Shelby Spong; these latter interludes don’t obviously connect to the theme of the book, and it’s hard to see their purpose other than name-dropping.

My main criticism with this work is a kind of unsophisticated universalism that was attempted in chapters five and following. Tickle seems to imply that spirituality is common to all people, and that the former is necessary while the latter is optional. This essentialist reductionism 1) fails to account for the differences in basic presuppositions and details of religions from which the idea of “spirituality” (itself a Christian construct) springs, and 2) veers dangerously close to a kind of colonialism wherein other experiences of spirituality are measured against an unarticulated Christian norm. That is, in a valiant attempt to get Christianity out of spirituality, Tickle crams all the other kinds of spirituality into a Christian norm. A latter and less problematic criticism is the extremely dated nature of the work (even only twenty years later). Tickle concentrates on her own Baby Boomer generation, not even mentioning Generation X (to say nothing of the generation following). Even in the mid-nineties, to concentrate solely on paper book sales and survey consumption of religion without even mentioning the internet was a big omission – at this point in history, it looks downright irrelevant. Use Tickle’s book as an interesting look into a small slice of religious history, but don’t use it for its methodology or its philosophical assumptions.

Andrew Hipp is the plant systematist and herbarium curator at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. He is the author of several natural history books for children, a field guide to spring woodland wildflowers of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum, and scientific articles on the taxonomy and evolution of Carex. Rachel D.Davis received her M.F.A. in printmaking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Photographer DWIGHT KUHN's award-winning nature photographs have appeared in 125 children's books. He lives in Dexter, Maine.
