One of the best sourcebooks on the market

I am in seminary and have now used both vols. 1 and 2 of Raitt's work. I have also used a fair number of other texts to get history/theology/spirituality information for classwork and papers. These are among the best sources you can pick up on the subject. Each is a compendium of (believe it or not) good articles on topics covering the range of issues that has shaped Christianity from early times to the present. It also wisely includes considerable information about outside influences like paganism and Islam. The only possible negative comment I could make is that some articles have TOO much information at times. They are all written by respected scholars in the field, and some, while fascinating, run long. But, then again, if you "really need to know more" then this is a great place to start.

Most interesting is how the Ross family remembrances conflict with historical accounts. Betsy, for example, told of meeting with George Washington, but this isn't substantiated in his thorough journal. And only her family's stories support the claim that she made the American flag. The perfect gift!

For our daughter's 9th birthday we wanted to purchase a nice book about Betsy Ross to go with the costume I made her. She's very interested in historical figures and she's an avid reader. This is the perfect book! It's about a 4th grade level and is very nicely bound. It looks like something you might find in a school library collection. It also arrived very quickly. Now she's ready for our Independence Day parade AND she can impress her family and friends with some historical information about Betsy Ross as well. Exceeded my expectations.

Another volume in the stellar series by the Crossroad Press, like the other volumes in this series, 'How to Read the New Testament' by Etienne Charpentier comes from the French series by Les Editions du Cerf. It can be read as volume two, following Charpentier's book 'How to Read the Old Testament', or as a volume by itself.
This is in some ways a guide for those who don't know how to read the Bible. It is in some ways done as a travel guide - the Bible is the destination, but like most geographic places, there are actually a variety of landmarks and stops to make in any location, and these will all vary.
This book is richly illustrated with maps, line-art drawings, side-bar boxes and pull-boxes, and other graphic-design features that make reading an adventure. One can read through each chapter as a narrative, and then return to fill in the blanks with the sidelined information.
The first twenty pages are a sort of preparation for the journey. It looks at the basic structure of the New Testament. It looks at three stages of development in the formation of the New Testament: the life and teaching of Jesus, the original communities and their shared stories, then the final redaction and writing of the texts. Then, Charpentier looks both at the literary genre of the Gospels, and the literary genres found in the Gospels. One of Charpentier's very interesting observations is that it is fortunate for us that we do not have a photograph of Jesus - we might even feel, by extension, that we are fortunate to have the ambiguous textual story of him that we do.
The chapters that follow roughly the historical order of the three stages of development: the world of the first Christians, the Easter event celebrated, the person and work of Paul, a look at each of the Gospels and other writings (Mark, Matthew, Luke/Acts, the Gospel and Letters of John, the Apocalypse), and ends with the enigmatic yet meaningful discussion of the beginnings of the Gospels - the Gospels are never ending, in a very real sense. Each chapter has a narrative section of history, with a second section looking at a key idea or piece of importance for later Christian development and practice.
This guide can be used individually or as part of groups in church or school settings. It's outline would make for a good one-semester course on the New Testament at the undergraduate or even advanced high school level, a Sunday school or Bible school series, or for an individual to use as 'traveller's friend' while going it alone.
This book assumes the reader will have a copy of the Bible to use side by side with the text - it does not replace the Bible or the necessity of reading the actual texts in the New Testament. The author recommends the Revised Standard Version or the Jerusalem Bible; both of which have also been updated since the original writing of this volume.
Charpentier gives a good but somewhat dated list for further reading in New Testament and Gospel studies. He also gives a list of the writings of the Early Church Fathers for a look at the further development of Christian writing prior to the closure and formation of the canon of the New Testament.
A great study aid, interesting and useful. Fr. Etienne Charpentier dedicated much of his effort to encouraging Bible study, particularly among his fellow Catholics. He gives tribute to those who worked with him in Chartres and across France as co-workers in the production of this volume.

An ancient tool that reveals the real you

Yeah, I was a little put off by the mystical name and cultish icon, but this method of discerning someone's personality, their gifts, and the reasons for their "favorite sin" has POWER.

Dating back to the Desert Fathers, it helps reveal the "true" self over against the "false", or "shadow", self. Myers-Briggs and StrengthsFinder 2.0 are helpful, but this is NECESSARY.

Richard Rohr writes, "[...] the Enneagram shows us, among other things, the dark side of our gifts. [...] people are are destroyed by their gifts and talents. We are destroyed by our gifts because we identify too closely with what we can do well. Once we were told that we were destroyed by our sins. That's true, but the issue is more subtle."

That rang true with me at a deep level...

He went on, "We cling too much to what comes our way naturally." We spend the first thirty years of life developing an impression, a self-image that we fixate on. And by the time you're forty, this cultivated image is so ingrained that we "are literally prepared to go through hell just so we don't have to give it up. It determines most of what we do or don't do, say or don't say, what we occupy ourselves with and what we don't. We're all affected by it."

Then he poses the ultimate existential question:

"The question is: Do I have the freedom to be anything other than this role and this image."

And the answer is Yes, you do, which Rohr spells out in the book. So do yourself, your spouse and family, your community... do us all a favor and READ the book.

I have read a good number of Richard Rohr's books

I have read a good number of Richard Rohr's books, and an just finishing the Enneagram. It is so insightful, and useful in just understanding people you meet or family members as well as yourself. I have never been sorry I took the time to digest any of his thought-provoking works The whole concept of the Enneagram was brand new for me, and I have found it wonderfully informative.

About the Author
Charles W. Maynard is an ordained United Methodist minister who works with the Camp and Retreat Ministry of the Holston Conference in east Tennessee and in southwestern Virginia. He has an undergraduate degree from Emory and Henry College and a master of divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. The first executive director of Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Charles has written 20 children's books as well as national park guidebooks, including Time Well Spent, a family hiking guide to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that he wrote with Hal Hubbs and David Morris. He and his wife, Janice, have two daughters, Caroline and Anna, and two granddaughters, Anastasia and Ainsley.
