Reading Level Too High

Not only do the directions not allow you to build a decent replica, this book is too hard for a 4th Grader to read. The information is good but it is written at at 7th Grade level. Most 4th Graders cannot read this on their own an get much out of it.

Nice photos; terrible plans

While the introduction was interesting, we got this book as a guide to build a scale model of the mission.

The three pages of instructions were completely useless in building anything like the mission. Had we looked more closely, we would have seen that the model in their instructions don't look anything like the actual building. I have to wonder if an editor even looked at the directions before printing it.

The photos were enough for us to use, but still ... if they're going to include instructions, they should actually accomplish their desired goal.

Free and Faithful in Christ

In the 1970's, Catholic moralist Bernard Haring undertook to revise an earlier massive three-volume treatise on moral theology called 'The Law of Christ.' Written around the Vatican II period, the Law of Christ series tended to follow the manualist tradition in Catholic moral theology with the approach being a bit like a computer program today - input the right commands into the properly programmed system and out comes the right answer. Likewise, manualist moral theology focused on drawing up lists of sins, their nature and gravity (whether it is light or serious matter), and the required penance advised for the sin. Such an approach was primarily designed to teach Catholic priests in the art of 'casuistry' in the confessional, something later ridiculed by Pascal and the Protestants.

Manualist moral theology had its advantages as well as its weaknesses - indeed traditionalist Catholics following in the footsteps of JPII are trying to revive it today, either in the form of revised scholastic works or in the new 'natural law' theories of morality. The massive three volume 'Way of the Lord Jesus' by Germain Gricez (which I covered in another review) is a good example of the revived manualist tradition.

Yet Haring realised the danger of sterile legalism, blind obedience to authority, and the lack of creativity inherent in the manualist tradition. Recalling the horrors of the Nazi era in his own country fostered by the silent acceptance of the public and the churches of barbarous Nazi atrocities based on a culture of absolute obedience, Haring argued moral theology had to have a new focus. Much like Pope Francis today, Haring called for a return to scripture, Christ and a new approach to tradition, moving beyond static absolutes and laws to a more dynamic, personalist and relational approach to moral theology.

This revision is accomplished by Haring with great insight, pastoral compassion and wisdom, and formidable knowledge of human nature, without watering down the demands of the Gospel or engaging in hard-headed legalism. It is all the more remarkable he is able to achieve this as a relatively traditionalist priest.

Haring got into hot water with the Vatican in his later years as he questioned the absoluteness of some church moral teachings and decrees. Dying in 1994, it is a shame he did not return to these works to modernise them. It is unfortunate no-one of his calibre and talent has replaced him.

The only fault with his works I can point out is the lack of a systematic approach - the writing often seems more like a series of seminar notes or papers than a logically connected whole. This is a big weakness of this set of works compared to the more systematic and clear 'Law of Christ.' But perhaps a less structured approach was needed to allow more freedom for Haring to explore moral issues in a more flexible manner.

Her response is the need to grow in "wise faith" -- a faith that acknowledges both the death-dealing and life-giving elements in one's tradition, and finds healthy ways to reconceive and relate to that tradition. An excellent combining, overall, of insights from spirituality, psychology, biblical studies, and theology.

Inspiring for women struggling with patriarchy

This book reflects the contemporary struggle of women who are searching to move beyond the "dry land" of the Christian tradition. Killen effectively takes the reader through the powerful recognition that the pain of exclusion is itself giving women voice in our time. This is hopeful for women who want more from the tradition, spiritually, emotionally and psychologically. A feminist theology class recently read this book. The discussions were rich and gave courage (and voice) to the participants. A must-read for all who journey through patriarchy on the way to redemption.

There is so very little which I can usefully add to the excellent review here by the Reverend Father Condon, so let me say ditto.

You may discover this same excellent explication of our vows in a later edition by the Pauline Sisters Bombay Society (2001) at ISBN-10: 8171764479 under Poverty, Celibacy and Obedience ; A Radical Option for Life but we are grateful for this present economical edition from the great spiritual printing house Crossroad, as this theological treatise by a well published member of the Sacred Heart Missionary Congregation truly opens up to us the infinite depths of the meaning and the message and the mystery and the mission and the significance of our traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, founded upon the firm and brave and gentle ground of non-violence.

Once we begin to understand underlying principles we can understand applications. Thus once we understand the underlying chords and scales in music we may begin to improvise and to live correctly yet freely. Once we understand our calling to Christ through Saint Augustine's famous epigram above, we live in Love and in freedom and in dignity, as the most recent Papal promulgations compel us. Once we understand the underlying principles of our religious vows, we find in them not restrictions but freedom and love and joy.

Often when we stay with the exteriors, we establish house rules, we find limitations, we find death of the life of Love. When we reflect upon the principles we find the freedom of God, who is Love. When we dwell upon the exteriors we invent ways around them and thus violate the principles while convincing ourselves that we observe the vow. Thus Jesus commands us to Love our enemies, yet we wind up centuries later pleasing the Empire by inventing a contorted and unholy "just war" theory which violates the principles of Jesus. As O'Murchu reminds us here "In fact, the principle was so widely abused that St. Thomas Aquinas in the Thirteenth Century affirmed that war is always sinful, even if it is occasionally waged for a just cause (p. 7)."

Thus we find religious communities whose individuals take vows of poverty yet which communally own great properties and excuse their limousines as property of the community, while violating the underlying principles, poor friars enjoying a wealthy house. Thus we discover the profound and criminal scandal of the Vatican Bank.

O'Murchu here calls us back to the foundational principles through a renewed and most ancient perspective. We have all heard of the underlying virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity as walking hand in hand with uour vows. Here we find a fresh and close and profound examination of the vows in the most traditional light of non-violence.

O'Murchu opens with an analysis of the principle of non-violence throughout the history of the Church, complementing this presentation with an examination of other tradition's principle of non-violence, including Gandhi's ahimsa and satyagraha, and their application as agape by the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther, Jr.

In fact, O'Murchu compellingly exhorts us that the vows are not only designed for individual salvation in the after-life, but build in fact the Kingdom of God here and now, compelled, as the recent Apostolic Exhortation by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI Sacramentum Caritatis: el Sacramento de la Caridad: una Exhortacion Apostolica Postsinodal reminds us, by the Eucharist in ipse.

O'Murchu thereby brings us a fresh and profound means of contemplating our religious vows and their integral application in our lives. Having defined non-violence admirably, O'Murchu applies it to each of the vows, showing how each vow is a demonstration of commitment to nonviolence, in areas of economics, sexuality and in humble submission to God's Holy Will, rejecting earthly powers and dominations for the Kingdom which comes, which we make real within our Holy Vows.

Highly recommended for all Catholic religious and indeed for all practicing Catholics seeking to live our Faith in a materialist and individualist and aggressively greedy and sensualist land. A refocusing of the reason for people living a vowed life.

A delicious millenial retransformation of the vowed life as a paradigm for oppositiional values in this age of law and order. O'Murchu defines the vows of religion in their pan-global concept as quintessential guideposts for the people of the 21st Century. Explicating Adrian Van Kamm's broad notion of the vows' "value radiating" essence, O'Murchu defines the vows in the context of guidelines of virtue and as the antitheses of violence. Courageously countering the catatonic obeisance to structure under the aegis of an endemic patriarchy, O'Murchu posits the idea that the male hierarchic structure of religions and cultures must accede to an expansion and an enlivening of the vows as living entities, as opposed to the vows as restrictions upon life. O'Murchu's quixotic example relative to celibacy is that human sexual urges and divine creation come together from the same energy to birth universal life. Repression will bring nothing but void. Essentially developing the positive qualities of vowed life as vows of mutual sustainability (poverty), relatedness (celibacy), and mutual collaboration (obedience). Fr. O'Murchu challenges the reader to reassess their role in living the vows and calls the male hierarchs, of all religions and cultures, to refocus and redefine the violent parameters of the vows as they have been developed over the past ten thousand years, to the pacific, harmonic tranquility of relatedness which calls humankind to virtue. O'Murchu supports and sustains his thesis through an anthropological and paleontological diagnosis of virtues in history and scripture, thereby indicating the original intention of vowed life in Eastern and Western cultures. Taking his hypothesis a major step forward, he argues that civilzation must return to the vowed life according to its original function as the beacon and as the goal for all living.. He argues that we must radically subsume the femininity which has been excluded from the consciousness of humanity these past three millenia. A must read for all male hierarchs, particularly those hierarchs who dominate the major contemporary monotheistic religions. To neglect reassessing vowed virtue and restoration of ideals and goals, O'Murchu asserts, will hasten the demise of Christianity and culture as we know it, due to the unconscionable continued violence of present vowed life, as misdirected against human nature. For the past 20 years, Bishop John Spong (Why Christianity Must Change or Die) has written essays for the Newark, N.J., diocesan newsletter the Voice. His wife, Christine Spong, has collected and edited more than 50 of these essays. This collection of informal writings addresses moral issues, religion, politics and the Anglican communion and enters into conversation with other faiths. In one essay, Bishop Spong asserts that the U.S. must call its citizens to a nobler vision of unity, and that it is immoral for people to justify their distress, their hostility and even their greed for power by covering these elements with the name of Jesus. In his 1991 essay, "Yes, Virginia, There Is a God!," the bishop contends that Santa Claus represents the spirit of Christmas that finds its greatest pleasure in giving rather than receiving. In like manner, he says, the word "God" stands for an ultimate truth that drives us beyond the symbol to the edges of our imagination. "God" represents the power of love that lifts us out of our self-imposed prisons and shows us what life can ultimately be. Acerbic and humorous, Bishop Spong's essays are forthright, spiritual and humane, reflecting the mind and the heart of their author.

Vintage Bishop Spong

The series of essays has been compiled from Bishop Spong's columns over the years, and it deals with topics ranging from ecumenism to politics to family members. All of these essays are articulate, passionate, and beautifully written. The personal ones are actively touching, the political ones incisive and thought-provoking. It is fascinating to see how both his writing style and perspectives evolved over time.
Those who dislike Bishop Spong will undoubtedly loathe this book. Those who admire him will find his perspectives and thoughts to be challenging, impressive, and extremely helpful in evaluating personal and public struggles in the light of an open, inclusive faith tradition. An excellent summation of Bishop Spong's beliefs, thoughts and ideals.

Sad Scholarship In Theology

In writing this review, I have to restrain myself from giving my own thesis and boring the those reading this review. This is hard because so much of this book is so bad. The are only two redeeming values: (1) Bishop Spong is a skilled writer and (2) a person gets to climb inside the mind of an extreme liberal theologian.
Bishop Sppong's liberal bias is so evident that he often is self-refuting. He calls everyone and positions who/which seems to disagree with him such trigger words like dishonest, spin-doctoring, fundamentalist, and distorting the truth.
Of course, Spong is therefore self-refuting as he, more than anyone is the master of theolical "spin doctoring" and dishonesty. He claims on page 111 that the Bible is wrong because it was used to promote slavery and segregation. This lack of logic is frightening. This doesn't mean the Bible is wrong, but those individuals who distorted scripture for the purpose of salvery are wrong. Didn't the abolitionist use scripture to free men? Is the Bible now also right.
This is just an example of his useless logic. Read only for the understanding how individuals who are blinded by idealogy will disregard evidence in favor of their own agenda.

Excellent overview

Probably the most controversial person I have seen still inside the Christian leadership, Spong never ceases to amaze me. Whether you agree with his views, theology, or his process, you must respect his strength. What amazes me is how someone of his generation and age can be so openminded and fight so hard to try to change a religion that he feels will crumble without such change. This book is a great overview of his writings and the evolution of his principles. If you are interested in Bishop Spong, but are not sure where to start, these essays are usually under 10 pages, and are a great look at a great mind.
