Rahner review

This book by Karl Rahner, especially the center section on Christ, is the best I have read on Christian theology.

Difficult exposition of Catholic faith

Karl Rahner is considered one of the leading Catholic theologians of the 20th century.

Rahner is interesting for several reasons, particularly for his strongly apophatic approach to God. This is reflected in this book, where God is considered the 'ultimate mystery' who is above 'all names', obviously echoing Pseudo-Dionysius.

Rahner's style is not the best or the most accessible, and Von Balthasar and Bernard Lonergan are much easier to read. Even Jacques Maritain is somewhat easier to read.

Rahner is not incomprehensible, but the reader will find this work very difficult to read unless they have some background to Rahner's thought, especially his extensive use of terms from existentialist and continental philosophy.

It remains one of his key works though, and needs to be read by any student of Rahner to understand his ideas.

Set the controls for the Heart of the Son

'Foundations of Christian Faith' is a deceptive title for a book which is in fact an overview of the whole field of Rahner's catholic progressive theology and it is no easy read; I gave an Italian version to a doctor friend who gave up reading it after the first 50 pages because 'it was too difficult'! It is however compulsory reading for anyone interested in the perennial conflict within catholicism between a theology inspired by St.Thomas(based on Aristotle) and St.Augustine(based on Plato). The representative of this latter theology is the Swiss theologian Von Balthasar who wrote his magisterial 'The Glory of the Lord' in response to what he saw as Rahner's 'dilution of the concept of Revelation' amongst other things. The current Pope Benedict XVI, a major theologian himself, is a firm supporter of Von Balthasar's theology which makes Rahner somewhat unpopular in Vatican theological circles today. Rahner, in contrast to the entire catholic approach to theology of the past 2000 years does not start his understanding of Christianity by elaborating upon the tenets of revealed faith, but starts from 'below' ie. from mankind as a species which is open to the supernatural in its very essence and then goes on to show how 'faith' fills this need or 'spiritual vacuum'; the point of conflict here is whether faith is inherent in human nature or is an act of grace (a created spiritual reality which is granted to Man but is not part of his natural constitution). Rahner, amongst other things, even opens out to Eastern religious ideas by stating that 'purgatory' might even be worked out over a series of successive reincarnations - something which clearly has the 'traditionalists' tearing their hair out!! A further difficulty, for the traditionalists, is that he tries to make evolution an integral part of an aspect of his understanding of faith - here I think he's on shakier ground. Placing a/any scientific theory as an integral part of theology exposes it to the risk of collapse should the theory prove (over time) to be false or is replaced by another theory (look at what happened with Galileo!!) - anyone interested can read Kuhn's 'The Structure of Scientific Revolutions'. Rahner's major works are currently out of print - so the 'Foundation' is indispensable reading if anyone wants to come to grips with one of the two 'giants' of modern theology (the other being Von Balthasar).I found this English translation to be excellent and its words have a very strong emotional as well as intellectual impact, which is why I invested in a copy despite having an Italian version. One last thing, Rahner's Jesuit biblical training can clearly be felt. Behind every concept he develops there is always a NT scriptural root, this is not stated explicitly, so be sure you keep the NT firmly in mind when you read him.

Theory meets implementation and change

Wes has an amazingly fresh, riveting and insightful introduction as he details three modern gifted leaders that fell because they were not able to self-differentiate between their weaknesses manifested in insecurity and subsequently curtail the reactive expressions of insecurity in their work environments. Basically, self-differentiation, "simply implicates one's capacity to chart one's own course in a lifelong process, in which one is emotionally present but not reactive to others". To overcome this natural tendency towards reacting to others out of our weakness Wes details his own spiritual journey illustrating a path from experiencing a deep spiritual calling to, listening to God, discovering strengths, vision casting and implementation through change, which is often messy. The backdrop for this leadership from the inside out is the journey of the RCA, which Wes heads up. Wes gives great examples of each of the talking points above in his journey leading the RCA into a bold new future. He sprinkles into the "story telling" a few great reality checks applicable to any leadership setting: as mentioned already, change is messy; one such 'mess' is that the day may come when the transformed organization grows past the leadership style and skillsets of the founding leader; one's leadership style must change to fit the present reality of the organization; transformation is most likely to occur through teams that catch the vision, as opposed to a charismatic leader; also, successful leaders see the big picture and understand their role "in the context of this longer narrative, and feel greater meaning and value in their role as they place themselves within this story-line."

What this writer finds most refreshing about Wes' book is that Wes uses original leadership material and applies it in his unique position as general secretary of the RCA. Most books in this genre are theories or paradigms or prophetic material that looks back at field work, here we have a seasoned practitioner who provides a rich story-line of implementing some of the best practices into his ongoing role leading a ministry. "Leadership From Inside Out" engages the reader in theory, implementation and follow-through. "Leadership from the Inside Out" will richly bless readers who are in a turn-around, revitalization and/or church plant situation.

This book clearly identifies the essential aspects of leadership

You must know yourself before you can lead others. This book clearly demonstrates how self-knowledge is critical to successful leadership. It fits excellently with other books that truly have the right handle on defining leadership, such as "Good to Great" and "Servant Leadership."

In a world that has so many pretenders to leadership, this book clearly hits the mark. It's one of a few true leadership classics. I have passed it along to many others.

About the Author
Charles W. Maynard is an ordained United Methodist minister who works with the Camp and Retreat Ministry of the Holston Conference in east Tennessee and in southwestern Virginia. He has an undergraduate degree from Emory and Henry College and a master of divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. The first executive director of Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Charles has written 20 children's books as well as national park guidebooks, including Time Well Spent, a family hiking guide to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that he wrote with Hal Hubbs and David Morris. He and his wife, Janice, have two daughters, Caroline and Anna, and two granddaughters, Anastasia and Ainsley.

time proves variety wrong

Decades ago when George Lucas presented STAR WARS for the first time, certain movie reviewers criticized it for its "silliness" and that "it would be easily forgotten." How wrong they were, and how embarrassed they now must be.
Variety has criticized films that are ahead of their time. Take for example the TV movie A CHILD CALLED JESUS, starring Matteo Bellina. On page 9 of this book, Variety complains about long shots, excessive makeup, amateur sets, unrealistic dialogue and unsynchronized dubbing.
But many people who have seen this film have praised it for its uniqueness compared to other Jesus films. Just visit [...] for reviews about this film. If you watch it, you will be mesmerized by the long shots; you will see that the makeup is NOT excessive (the actors have very natural skin tones compared to Cecil B. de Mille actors); you will observe that the sets are as natural as they should be in a Middle Eastern country; you will appreciate the dialogue as the words would personally touch you; you will tolerate the dubbing because this isn't even the fault of the filmmakers.

Well Written, Fascinating and Fair Minded

I knew very little about this subject before reading Ingo's book. I learned that these apparitions have been occurring for centuries - the earliest one he covers is from about 1520. He does a fine job of describing the apparitions, the seers, and the response of the church and the public. I find it fascinating that usually the Catholic church tries to ignore or distance itself from these apparitions, and only reluctantly and belatedly acknowledges them, often after trying at first to actively bury them. I wonder why? Perhaps because the messages given are often scathingly critical of the Catholic church authorities. Some who study the subject say that these apparitions are deceptive or demonic in nature. It puzzles me that with a trinity of God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, it is the fully human Mary who makes the appearances - go figure! Anyway, this is a fine way to learn more about a fascinating subject, and Ingo's writing is lively and detailed in his descriptions.
