As good as the price gets

This is a great anthology for those who want a broad overview of European medieval lyric. It is unfortunate that the text isn't one of facing-page translation with only a few of the songs having their originals in the back of the book. At least some of the songs do have originals so those interested in trying to work out the flavor or sound of what was actually composed can try to do so. I recommend that even for those who think they cannot read in Spanish or German or what have you. It is possible to look at endings of lines to see if there is rhyme and try to guess at sounds. It is lyric or song after all.

An Exciting Collection of Medieval Song Lyrics

This collection contains many types of medieval lyrics, from laments to love songs (both straight and gay) to tunes celebrating Christianity and love of one's homeland. Some of the songs contained herein are very short, just a couple of stanzas long, while others go on for pages and cover a number of topics. The collection covers lyrics from a number of geographical areas and time periods from early medieval (850A.D.) until around 1300 A.D. As such it gives you a huge assortment of tunes to choose from, coming from many peoples and cultures and across a broad spectrum of time. As you'd expect from such a large collection, I found that the tunes vary in their ability to capture my interest and please my tastes. The really short pieces I found frustrating, because they don't develop their subject matter enough, in my opinion, to really justify their inclusion in the book. I liked the pieces that were at least a page long, that built on their subjects and explored topics more in-depth. The quality of the metaphors that are chosen also vary a good deal, from clumsy attempts to quite sophisticated use of imagery. If your tastes run to short takes you might well like the shorter pieces more than I did, there are certainly enough of them to choose from in this work. With somewhere around 300 pieces included in the collection, there will definitely be something here to please even the most finicky reader, and most readers will find themselves engaging every few pages or so, or even more than that.

John Beck is professor of percussion at the Eastman School of Music, where he has taught since 1959. He has conducted the school's percussion ensemble since 1962. His compositions have been published by Carl Fischer, Boston Music, Kendor Music, Meredith Music, MCA, Wimbledon Music, Inc., Studio 4 Productions, and CPP/Belwin. He has served as state chairman for percussion, New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA, 1970-72); president of the New York State Percussive Arts Society (1976-82); national second vice president (1982-84), first vice president (1984-86), and president of the national Percussive Arts Society (1987-90).
Among the honors Beck has received include being named the Mu Phi Epsilon Musician of the Year (1976); Eastman's Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching (1997); and the Arts and Cultural Council of Greater Rochester Award for contributions to the arts (1999). He was inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 1999.

This is a great chapter book that proved to be the best source for a 5th grade report on Francis Marion. If you are looking for information on the Swamp Fox written by an author who knows his subject well, used good sources in his research, and found information not included in every other book on Marion, this is the book. Wish it was still in print. Glad it is available in audible version.

medicine wheel

Exhausted by the constant news driven by spoiled Hollywood types and D.C. politicians, I was looking for some connection with the Earth and my Native American heritage. I remember the feeling of visiting years ago the medicine wheel in Wyoming, and wanted to learn more.
In "Medicine Wheels" by Roy I Wilson, I found even more: a connection between the Native American beliefs and thos of both Jewish and Christian beliefs. Using the directions of the wheel, Wilson also brings in the fours colors of race (yellow, white, black and red), bringing them into concert.
The book did not cover completely my original desire to build a medicine wheel in my yard, but did give me insight into more of the meaning and much more than I expected of the philosophical point of view of those who turned to medicine wheels over time.
While I looked to the wheel as a place to find peace and connection with the earth,reading the book made me see the continuity of that desire - one which transcends location, race and religion, and ties us all together.
For those wishing to create a modern version as landscape, I also recomment "The Medicine Wheel Garden" by E. Barrie Kavasch. Conbining what I learned from both books, I have been able to create a wheel which seems to bring a sense of peacefulness to all who visit.

This book can be a good introduction to understanding the depths of meaning of the Native American medicine wheel. Additionally, the author has studied comparative religions and explains the similarities of Native American beliefs with Christian and Jewish beliefs. If you are a person who is interested in the oneness of all people, and nature, you will enjoy this book.

Grade 3-6-These series entries concentrate more on the voyages of exploration than on the lives of the explorers. The reading level is a bit higher and the contents more substantial than in the "Discover the Life of an Explorer" series (Rourke). Historical maps and etchings are combined with at least one modern map that illustrates each man's route (although in the case of Cartier, the routes are not complete because only the Canadian part is shown and the great Atlantic crossing is omitted). The layout is a bit cluttered, but there is a treasure-map look to each page that may attract some students. The author uses simple language to convey the achievements of each subject. However, the glossaries seem more obligatory, and arbitrary, than useful. The words "slaves," "violent," and "survivors" (and even "explorers" in Cortes) are included, when trickier words like "experience," "communicate," and "authorized" are not. And why, oh, why are pronunciations included for continent, constellations, and city-state, but not for Vespucci, Cartier, and Cortes. The square format and highlighted vocabulary might be off-putting to older students, but the books could conceivably be used for middle-schoolers with reading difficulties because they convey some of the hardships, historical context, and clash of cultures in brief texts.
