Grade 2-4-By concentrating on the food chains, Nadeau provides a different focus than that of other titles that may already be on library shelves. Instead of cataloging various plants and animals around a pond or in a tidal pool, he organizes the information to demonstrate the relationships among producers, herbivores, omnivores, carnivores, and decomposers. Each page of text faces a full page of photographs that include some of the flora and fauna mentioned. Sometimes the arrangement is confusing because two or three pictures are set on a page without much regard to relative sizes of the animals or whether they might be in such close proximity in the actual habitat. A two-page diagram at the end attempts to chart the interrelationships among various creatures, but it, too, is confusing. Some of the suggested Web sites are also odd. For example, one of the two forest choices relates to tropical rain forests even though the book focuses on temperate forests. Two of the pond references concentrate on how to build one while the third contains less information than Nadeau offers. In short, these volumes can fill a niche for reports, but they have limitations.

In 1968, Pope Paul VI issued an encyclical, Humanae Vitae, upholding the Catholic Church's ban on contraception. His stance went against the majority opinion of the Papal Birth Control Commission, an unprecedented gathering of bishops, cardinals, gynecologists, physicians, psychiatrists, demographers, sociologists, economists and married couples, which met in Belgium and Rome between 1963 and 1966. In an expose unveiling intrigue and bitter controversy at the highest levels of the Catholic Church, Northwestern University journalism professor McClory charges that Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani, head of the commission's final session, met privately with Paul VI, presented him with the "Minority Report" condemning birth control and personally swayed the pope to reverse his initial predisposition, which was toward approval of contraception within marriage. Pat and Patty Crowley, a married couple from Chicago, former leaders of the Christian Family Movement, served on the commission, voicing CFM members' desire for a change in Vatican policy. McClory skillfully interweaves the Crowleys' personal story with that of Humanae Vitae, tracing the couple's frustration and disillusionment with the Church's unbending position. Included is the full text of the commission's "Majority Report," never officially released by the Vatican. Photos.

Journalism professor McClory retells the dramatic story of the Vatican's Pontifical Commission on Population, Family, and Birth. This commission met from 1964 to 1966 under papal auspices to determine whether Roman Catholic teaching on contraception might be modified in view of developments in medicine, social sciences, and moral theology. The 1965 fourth meeting saw membership expanded to include more laymen and a few women. The majority final report recommended changes in traditional church views, but Pope Paul VI was convinced privately to retain the ban on contraception in Humanae Vitae (1968). Robert Kaiser has already told the story in The Politics of Sex and Religion: A Case History in the Development of Doctrine (Leaven Pr., 1985), but McClory focuses on U.S. commission members Pat and Patty Crowley, their work and bitter disappointment, and 1969-94 developments. This eminently readable account of the papal birth control commission initiated by John XXIII and continued by his successor, Paul VI, is also a fine popular history of Roman Catholic teaching on contraception. McClory, a journalism professor at Northwestern University, focuses on the small group of lay members, particularly longtime Chicago activist Patty Crowley. The focus makes for a compellingly personal story that is also an occasion for reflection on the role of the laity in the formation of Catholic doctrine. McClory does an excellent job of recounting events that led to the formation of the commission; the conversions undergone by a number of theologians (and bishops) under the influence of its "almost democratic" deliberations; the political machinations that led to a rejection of its findings in Humanae Vitae; and the aftermath of that rejection for commission members, Paul VI, and the church. The complete text of the majority report, "Responsible Parenthood," is included as an appendix. McClory is to be commended for making this story accessible to a popular audience; the book is an invaluable contribution to ongoing discussion about contraception and the teaching authority of the church. A betrayal most shocking, but not the last

To everyone but diehard Catholic conservatives, the encyclical "Humanae Vitae" was a watershed papal instruction. Judging by the polls of Catholic laity on contraception and abortion, HV either spelled the end of taking Church teaching seriously or the confirmation that the Church had betrayed lay Catholics and the spirit of openness promised by Vatican II.

Robert McClory's "The Turning Point" tells the story of the papal commission on birth control, inaugurated in the early 1960s by Pope John XXIII and continued by Pope Paul VI. McClory recounts the history of the Chruch's opposition to abortion and intervention into pregnancy from the ancient world on to the anti-contraception encyclical "Casti Conubii" written under Pope Pius IX. McClorey tells how the papal commission began its work fully expecting to confirm current Church teaching on contraception. Gradually however, especially after the commission took on a few lay members, the tide began to shift. Members like Pat and Patricia Crowley of Chicago put the theologians face to face with the effects of their decrees. For the first time, Catholics who had tried their best to practice the church-approved rhythm method of contracetion were able to tell their stories. The tales they told were of strained marriages, lack of spontaneity, and "love" regulated by charts and thermometers. The commission's final report recommended a change in the Church's position on birth control.

"The Turning Point" also tells the story of how the commission's report was subverted by Vatican conservatives who valued the fantasy of Church immutability more than the truth. With admirable dispassion, McClory shows Paul VI's cowardice, indecisiveness and lack of trust in any but the most recalcitrant of his advisors. Humanae Vitae, the encyclical that resulted from the commission's work was received so poorly by the world's bishops and laity that Paul VI never wrote another encyclical. It took the iron-fisted tactics of John Paul II to force the appearance of Church unity on the topic, whether to the Church's weal or woe remains to be seen.

McClory tells his story matter-of-factly, letting the vile and the guileless speak for themselves. Of course, a factual telling of this story makes McClory an enemy in the eyes of Church partisans. And it's disquieting to witness the Church treat its children with so much malevolence and distrust. McClory has done a service to the Church that may not bear fruit for decades or centuries. The "turning point" he lays out, begun in the modern era with Humanae Vitae, is gaining strength with every Church scandal and refusal to play by moral rules that are accepted in the supposedly godless secular world.

Nearly 40 years after Humanae Vitae, the Church has become smaller, more insular, more dismissive of its members, more authoritarian and more entrenched than ever. That it has become so in the spirit of the openness of the Second Vatican Council is a betrayal of epic proportions. The question is whether the Church can redefine itself in terms of simple truth, or whether it will continue as an empty shell - acting in direct contradiction to its own sacred precepts, in ignorance of its own evil and in disdain for those it intends to protect and teach.

Accessible and enchanting

I know that Faulkner is considered a great writer, but I had not found him accessible. About forty years ago I read "Light in August", which I thought was okay. My other attempts to read his books failed. So when the Library of America recently issued his earliest works, I figured that maybe was the way I could finally access Faulkner.

And boy did I love "Soldier's Pay"! I know it was an early work, that his style was not fully developed, that it was considered a minor effort, etc.

But, first of all, I could read it and for the most part clearly understand what was happening. Second, I found what was happening was unexpected and fascinating to me, very poignant, funny, odd, involving. Thirdly, while Faulker's ways of spelling, recording people's thoughts, and richly and repeatedly describing things (like the decadent, sensuous South), the book did immerse me in the scenes at a deeper and more viceral level than a more conventional novel would. Thus, it gave me a strong feeling of presence in this oft-romanticized bygone era; it was very nostalgic -- even though I never lived in the South and was born much later.

The characters -- like the fat, odd, scholarly, obnoxious, sexually aggressive Januarius Jones -- were so unique and intriguing. They are not the kind of characters I've found in other books. The plot was similarly odd and unpredictable; with numerous bizarre scenes.

Two drunken soldiers returning from WW1 take a deeply caring interest in another passenger on their train -- a returning captain who has been horribly disfigured, mentally disabled, and reported as dead. Along with a beautiful war widow who is also on the train (and with whom the two able returning soldiers both fall in love), they help the injured officer to reach his home, and his beloved fiancee, who is shocked and horrified by his condition and can't stand to be near him. Of course, as events unfold, it isn't clear what if anything is going through the injured captain's mind.

This is the kind of book I could easily read over again, and it gives me great pleasure just to think about it. It may not be one of Faulkner's better works from a technical standpoint, but it sure hit the spot with me (unlike the next novel in the Library of America volume -- "Moquitoes"!)

I'm hoping I will now be able to enjoy some of his other efforts in the same intense way.

After the two unifying introductory chapters by Rice (chair, ethnomusicology, UCLA), James Porter (Scottish ethnomusicology, Univ. of Aberdeen, Scotland), and Chris Goertzen (music, Earlham Coll.; Fiddling for Norway: Revival and Identity), articles in the Europe volume cover broad topics, such as European popular and art music and world and immigrant music in Europe. The geographic section explores the unique nature of individual European musical cultures as well as six transnational ethnic groups (e.g., Jews, Travellers) and 44 separate national cultures. Most of the 70-plus articles treat history, current practice, and scholarship, thus giving prospective researchers solid overviews and leads on individuals and institutions with expertise in each musical culture. Fantastic resource

This is a very informative collection of articles covering many aspects of South Asian music. It includes articles about North and South Indian classical traditions, folk traditions, dance, and popular music. There are also many articles about the role of music in society, women in music in South Asia, and South Asian music worldwide. Each region of South Asia is also covered with individual chapters. Many of the musical concepts and structures are exemplified in the accompanying CD; the relevant CD tracks are clearly noted in the text.
Living in Dubai, I have found myself immersed in South Asian culture, and recently started studying carnatic music on the veena, simply because it was here. Lacking all knowledge of the contexts in which the veena is played, I found myself floundering in my studies. The first teachers I worked with here either haven't had enough English or enough music theory studies to explain the music. I searched on the Net for information about carnatic music, but found that most of the information was written by Indians for Indians, using terms that I don't understand or can't make sense of. What makes this book different is that it is written for Western audiences, and the Indian terms are fully explained. As a result, this book has been a tremendous resource for me in explaining the music theory that I was struggling with, as well as the context of the music in Indian society. I've never read an encyclopedia cover to cover before, but once I got started reading this one, I couldn't stop.

While presuming a certain readiness to receive Barbara Fiand's deeply personal and strikingly cosmic sharing of her experience of prayer and healing, this book also calls the the reader into a holy and personal prayer relationship with God. In an interdisciplinary manner, Fiand draws the reader into a view of reality that manifests the power of thought and of prayer and the healing of both personal and cultural brokenness. The marriages of the "sacred" and the "secular," the past and the future, the time and space dimensions give birth to an awareness of the interconnectedness of all of life in God. I personally experienced a call to a deeper prayer life that draws all into a consciousness that moves to health and wholeness and holiness. For the serious reader and the brave of heart, I highly recommend this scholarly and personal sharing of the life and prayer of the author.

PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION AFFECTS THE HEALING OF OUR WORLD

This is what I call a "wow" book! It is filled with practical insights of self-acceptance and cosmic horizons. To read it, is to pray it. No matter where you are at in your spiritual journey, you are called forth to the more - to letting go into your best self. Along with quantum challenges, it inspires one to believe that the whole (even of oneself) is more than the parts. Fiand is obviously a pray-er and a healer. While alluding to personal crises and growth, her work could be even more stimulating with the actual sharing of her story.

Beluga whales and their babies

This is an excellent factual book about the birth, habitat and life of a beluga whale. The text is full of information stated in a simple and direct way that young readers would be able to read. The pictures are wonderful, although the actaul photograph of the baby beluga being born is one I would avoid in my elementary classroom. I know the students would think the photos are as adorable as I did! The table of contents, pronounciation keys and glossary are helpful for young students. The big print and bold face vocabulary words make this book perfect for an elementary classroom. The authentic photographs make this book perfect for any child interested in whales or aquariums. I think this is an excellent resource for young children. I love this book!!!

Your Sorrow is My Sorrow is one of those once in a lifetime books. I happened to pick this up by accident, or should I say by divine Providence. The words are comforting whether you have lost a loved one, to death, drugs or mistrust...this book will carry you through. The words of Mary come striking through to the heart and lay to rest in the lap of comfort and solace. The prayers are simple yet heartfelt. This is a book that will get you through the rough times. Cannot say enough about this book and the healing it's brought me! I read it, gave my copy away, then ordered two more to have on hand. Joyce Rupp's prayers and devotions bring comfort to a hurting heart as we're reminded how our Blessed Mother is united with us in our suffering, and when she is there, so is her Son, Jesus. This book is a blessing and I would recommend it to anyone.

Excellent and didn't disappoint

Excellent book. It was given to me by a friend (who couldn't remember the author - just that it was an excellent book and provided help for her. She had just bought a couple of copies. She gave it to me to give to a friend who was losing her husband to cancer. I started skimming through it before I sent it off, and within the week my husband was diagnosed with cancer and our lives turned upside down. Joyce Rupp is my favorite spiritual author and this book didn't disappoint. I kept that original copy, but it helps me so much that I bought 2 others and gave them away. I am a spiritual director and have also used it with my directees. Joyce wrote this book after soliciting the input of others. It lets you know you aren't alone in this journey called life with all it's ups and downs. There are stories by other people who have gone through/are going through sorrows. There are prayers that give you strength and comfort when you want to cry out in your pain or feeling lost. There are meditations that help you find peace in the middle of chaos. There is HOPE. I highly recommend it.
