Using the traditional seven sorrows of Mary (prophecy of Simeon, flight into Egypt, Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus carrying his cross, standing beneath the cross of Jesus, receiving Jesus' dead body, Jesus being laid in the tomb), Rupp (The Cup of Our Life) asks readers to meet their own sorrows in Mary's journey. For example, when she discusses the flight into Egypt, she notes, "Sometimes it is better not to run or flee from our 'Herods.' Sometimes we need to stay and do battle. We never know what price our freedom will be until we have taken the step away for our 'Herod' toward our new land." Each chapter ends with poems, meditations, guided imagery and questions for personal reflection or group discussion. Joyce Rupp is well known for her work as a writer, spiritual midwife, international retreat leader, and conference speaker. She is the author of numerous bestselling books, including Open the Door and Fragments of Your Ancient Name. Rupp is a member of the Servite (Servants of Mary) community and the codirector of the Institute of Compassionate Presence. She resides in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mary Southard is nationally known for her work as a visual artist, educator, and student of the Earth. A member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of La Grange, Illinois, she works in a variety of media paint, plaster, paper, crayon, clay and is best known as creator of the Earth Calendar.

For The Heavy of Heart

Your Sorrow is My Sorrow is one of those once in a lifetime books. I happened to pick this up by accident, or should I say by divine Providence. The words are comforting whether you have lost a loved one, to death, drugs or mistrust...this book will carry you through. The words of Mary come striking through to the heart and lay to rest in the lap of comfort and solace. The prayers are simple yet heartfelt. This is a book that will get you through the rough times. Thank you Joyce Rupp!

HEALING MESSAGE

Cannot say enough about this book and the healing it's brought me! I read it, gave my copy away, then ordered two more to have on hand. Joyce Rupp's prayers and devotions bring comfort to a hurting heart as we're reminded how our Blessed Mother is united with us in our suffering, and when she is there, so is her Son, Jesus. This book is a blessing and I would recommend it to anyone.

Excellent and didn't disappoint

Excellent book. It was given to me by a friend (who couldn't remember the author - just that it was an excellent book and provided help for her. She had just bought a couple of copies. She gave it to me to give to a friend who was losing her husband to cancer. I started skimming through it before I sent it off, and within the week my husband was diagnosed with cancer and our lives turned upside down. Joyce Rupp is my favorite spiritual author and this book didn't disappoint. I kept that original copy, but it helps me so much that I bought 2 others and gave them away. I am a spiritual director and have also used it with my directees. Joyce wrote this book after soliciting the input of others. It lets you know you aren't alone in this journey called life with all it's ups and downs. There are stories by other people who have gone through/are going through sorrows. There are prayers that give you strength and comfort when you want to cry out in your pain or feeling lost. There are meditations that help you find peace in the middle of chaos. There is HOPE. I highly recommend it.
