Richard Rohr reminds us that it's ok to let get and be simple again

Simplicity and freedom are made for each other and supposed to fit together life. Richard Rohr shows how this can be done if we allow ourselves to let go of all the nonessential things in our lives. Bringing God back into the center of our lives and our souls centers us and reminds of why we are in this word.

This is a beautiful book. Richard Rohr is a very lovely writer. His style is insightful, and deep, soul diving, yet simple and very concise. I read this book in small doses, chewing and savoring every moment. It changed my life, breaking down my false pretenses and turning my heart inward to confront some walls I had made and turn them in to bridges.

AWESOME READ!!!!!

I have been reading about Simplicity for a little over a year and have found that practicing Simplicity truly enriches your life. This book has to be one of the best books I have read on Simplicity! Richard Rohr is right on target when he speaks about simplicity and the condition of America...and when he addresses the church in America! I found this book to be very thought provoking, eye-opening, and this is quite a powerful book. This book also got me interested in the life and practice of Saint Francis, which lead me into other wonderful books. Richard Rohr is awesome and I was truly blessed by this book. I think people who are truly on the spiritual path tend to be lead into Simplicity and this book will truly be beneficial to all seekers of truth!

A new look for a classic reference work.

The 5th edition of "Famous First Facts" is a virtually complete make over of a classic reference work. Joseph Nathan Kane, who published the first edition over 65 years ago, has been joined by Steven Anzovin and Janet Podell in compiling the information (Mr. Kane was born in 1898, so he's entitled). Some features in the new edition seem confusing at first, but are not a major hindrance to finding information. The first thing an experienced user will notice is that all entries are assigned a 4-digit number, beginning with the first entry on page 1, # 1001, through the last entry, # 8155, on page 629. The five indexes (which take up almost 500 additional pages) use these reference numbers to guide the reader to information. The main change involves the organization of categories, which have been rearranged to be more topical, rather than strictly alphabetical as in previous editions. Broad categories are divided into one or two subcategories. The problem is that not all the entries in the 4th edition have been retained in the current volume. In the 4th edition, for example, the first five entries under the main category FOOTBALL PLAYER list the first (a) Athlete enshrined in 2 Halls of Fame [with a cross-reference to the category Hall of Famer]; (b) Black football player to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy; (c) Football player to punt 98 yeards; (d) Football player to score 50 points in 1 game; and (e) Woman football player (professional). In the new edition, item (a) which refers to Cal Hubbard, is missing. His name is not in the index. Hubbard is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (as a player) and the Baseball Hall of Fame (as an umpire). Item (b) is now under AWARDS-SPORTS-BASEBALL. Steve O'Neal's 98-yard punt (item (c)) has been dropped. Item (d) is under SPORTS AND RECREATION-FOOTBALL. Item (e) can be found under SPORTS AND RECREATION-FOOTBALL-GAMES, with the heading "Professional football game in which a woman participated." Some updating of language is to be expected ("African-American" has replaced "Black"), but other changes might be seen as examples of political correctness. Under WOMAN, the 4th edition lists the first "Heroine publicly rewarded was Hannah Duston." The new edition states, under POPULATION-SETTLEMENT the first "Settler heroine publicly rewarded was Hannah Duston." Two changes in the new edition detract in some measure from its usefulness. Previous editions had references to published source materials at the end of many entries. Older editions also used full personal names wherever possible, with nicknames in quotation marks. In the 4th edition, for example, the entry on Hanna Duston (see previous paragraph) referred the reader to "George Wingate Chase -- The History of Haverhill." The 4th edition tells us the first "Baseball player (major league) killed in a game was Raymond Johnson ("Ray") Chapman ... who was accidentally hit on the left side of his head by pitcher Carl William ("Willie") Mays ... in a game at the Polo Grounds, New York City, on August 16, 1920." The new edition says the first "Major league baseball player killed in a game was Raymond Johnson Chapman ... who was accidentally hit on the left side of his head by a pitch thrown by Willie Mays[.]" A youngster reading this entry might think that this Willie Mays is the same Willie Mays who played outfield for the New York/San Francisco Giants in the 1950s and '60s. There is at least one item of misinformation from the 4th edition that has not been corrected. The first postage stamp depicting a Jew was NOT the 3-cent commemorative honoring Samuel Gompers, issued January 27, 1950. It was, in fact, the Four Chaplains 3-cent stamp issued May 28, 1948. The stamp was a tribute to the four military clergymen who went down with the S.S. Dorchester, so that others could take seats in lifeboats. One of the chaplains pictured is Rabbi Alexander D. Goode. I found the following entry a bit puzzling: The first "Pope to visit the White House in Washington, DC, was Pope John Paul II, who flew across the Atlantic in Shepherd 1, landing in Boston, MA, on October 1, 1979. In six days he visited Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Urbandale, IA, Chicago, and Washington. He returned to Rome from Andrews Air Force Base, near Washington, on October 6." Here's a question: On which date did Pope John Paul II visit the White House? The entry doesn't say. One thing I found interesting was that entries within a category or subcategory are arranged chronologically, rather than alphabetically. So, under NEWS, the first four items are "Opinion poll" (1824), "News dispatch by telegraph" (1844), "News dispatch by commercial telegraph" (1844), and "Press censorship by military authorities" (1861). When items are read in order, the reader follows a timeline of the innovations in a given subject. Although I might sound like a nitpicker, I do recommend this book.

Great reference & General Reading

I received this book as a gift about a year and a half ago & didn't look at it at all. One lazy evening,I picked it up and began leafing through it. I haven't put it down in over four months. It's a book of firsts organized by exacting categories and its utterly interesting. You'll be reading and leafing through it for many years.

Day, head of the music department at Salve Regina College in Rhode Island, accurately and wittily skewers what passes for culture in American Catholicism, particularly as expressed in church music. He takes aim at the "Irish-American" repertoire of songs that comprise Catholic music in this country, and assails other less felicitous liturgical practices in vogue since Vatican II, such as applauding during Mass. "Liturgical post-modernism," according to Day, has resulted in noisy and forced participation from the laity, and encourages a church-wide narcissism that is a serious threat to individuals as well as the institution. No mere nay-sayer, Day makes positive suggestions for nurturing the latent vitality he perceives in the American Catholic community. This is an informative, insightful and entertaining critique.

For a generation that does not understand liturgy!

Thomas Day presents a very interesting theory as to why Catholics have become silent during the Mass. His comments at the current state of litugical music (as well as liturgy in general, seeing that the two are closely connected) are explained very thoroughly with very clear examples. While he certainly does not have much love for contemporary "folkish" church music and informal (sloppy) liturgies, he does not feel a 180 degree turn to the Tridentine Mass of old will solve the problem. I found myself laughing out loud as Day would discuss the exact situations present in my parish in a very witty and humorous way. If you think that "They Will Know We Are Christians" or "Here I Am Lord" is the best litugical music out there, then buy this book and open yourself up to 2000 years of Catholic tradition that Thomas Day very cleverly unlocks.

Understand the Dark Days of Catholic Music

Once upon a time the Nasty Old Church was dominated by gray-haired old men in choir robes who led choirs in renditions of the St. Gregory Hymnal and choral Masses of great insipidity. Then the Fathers of Vatican Council II wisely sat together and, behold, decreed that all the people should sing together in Latin and Gregorian chant should have pride of place. But, said they, in certain mission lands indigenous music and language may be used in some circumstances. Then came fell creatures fresh from six months of classes in Pastoral Music, bearing guitars and microphones and amplified boxes filled with transistors. And, behold, they appealed to the Spirit of Vatican II, who heard their pleas and gave them power over religious women, and men with itching ears. And these cried out to their bishops, saying "away with anything written before 1970, and with organs of metal and wood, and with choruses singing aught unsyncopated, and with any instrument that is not plucked. And they cast all these into the fire, and behold there was such a noisesome sound as had not been heard since the dawn of time. Thomas Day, sometimes with tongue in cheek, but often with pitchfork in hand, skewers the new liturgical music establishment without mercy. He indicts FBI (Foreign Born Irish) priests for imposing a reign of silence and maudlin hymns on generations of American Catholics. But he also impales those who impose unsingable light rock music with insipid lyrics and syncopated melodies. Unfortunately, Day's analysis is not dated in 2001. We are still stuck with the drivel that poured forth from the St. Louis Jesuits in the seventies. Indeed, the new liturgical music reign of terror is worse than the old maudlin hymns ever were. Day doesn't have much hope for change, and, unfortunately, events since publication of this classic have pretty well borne him out. We're now into the third generation of American Catholics who--unless they have lived in Europe or some of the last remaining havens of good music here and there in the U.S.--have never heard Gregorian chant or anything composed prior to 1970.

an enjoyable read, highly pertinent observations

This is not a book about one particular type of mass versus another, its about achieving practical, meaningful, enjoyable community worship. A few years ago out of curiosity, I attended a tridentine sung mass. I had never been to a high mass in latin before and I found it a much deeper spiritual experience than the post Vatican II mass I was used to. The solemnity, the ritual, and the music combined to let me understand the grave import of the ceremony, and become deeply aware of the special presence of God, what's more it was joyous and enjoyable. I am a beginner with Karl Rahner and when I asked a theologian friend if she could recommend a book on Rahner that would help me to understand his thought, she recommended this book. It consists of his more pastoral, non-academic writings. It is full of nuggets that I have found enriching.

I have long been intrigued by this short thought from Rahner: “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or he will not exist at all." It struck me as true and I wanted to read more from Rahner on mysticism. This book introduced me to his pastoral thought which in essence is mysticism lived out and in action in everyday life. With that in mind, I have appreciated this introduction to the thought of this great twentieth-century theologian.

It is best taken in small doses, and can greatly enrich a personal day of recollection. It spans the whole liturgical year so there is always something appropriate to the season and very often for a feast day.

A great theologian made easy

First off, let me say that I love to read Karl Rahner. This collection however was put together for the layman and for me, a layman,
if suffers for it. Rahner is a wonderful theologian, perhaps the greatest of the 20th century but as a homilist he isnt all that great. In fact he was somewhat disappointing.

Guiley is a respected, prolific author of reference books for the New Age. Her output includes the Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft (1989), Harper's Encyclopedia of Mystical and Paranormal Experience (1991), and the Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits [RBB O 15 92].

She writes in the introduction that "my purpose in writing this book is to help others discover the treasure in their own dreams." She goes on to say that "the definitions of symbols provided in this book are drawn from myth, alchemy and modern dreamwork." The result is a do-it-yourself dream manual anchored in symbols primarily from the Western tradition.

Part 1 contains essays on the science of dreams, cross-cultural beliefs, nightmares, dreams and the paranormal, dreams and alchemy, and working with dreams. Part 2 lists dream symbols and their interpretations. For example, dreaming of oats symbolizes "sexual energy or activity." The approximately 1,000 entries are arranged alphabetically and vary in length from a phrase to several paragraphs. Adequate cross-references are provided. A bibliography of recommended reading contains 125 titles, the majority published in the 1980s.

There are many books on the interpretation of dreams, but most of them are not arranged for quick lookups. With current interest in New Age topics and the continuing interest in dreams, this title will be a good addition to reference and circulating collections in public libraries.

This book informs us of the process of dreaming and different activities that may occur during sleep. No one had discovered the true reason why we dream, but we do know we need to dream.
Also the book has a dictionary of dream interpretations in the back. Your dreams do mean something, sometimes the meanings of our needs aren't obvious, so they disguise themselves in our dreams. Knowing what your dreams mean will help satisfy your inner desires, ones you don't even know you have.

It makes sense

I've used this book several times to interpret dream images and it almost always gives me good answers. It doesn't delve into new age nonsense or into fortune telling like so many other books on the subject do. Instead it combines psychology and mythology in a way that makes dream images understandable and relatable. I only wish that the book was even more extensive.

Since 2001 Walter Cardinal Kasper has served as president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity at the Vatican. Formerly a professor of theology and diocesan bishop in Germany, he has written in the fields of systematic and ecumenical theology. Cardinal Kasper is a former member of the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches.

Tradition and Renewal of Catholic Church Leadership

Difficulty and scandal are nothing new in God's church. This latest scandal of child abuse is especially troubling and threatens to injure the credibility of the U.S. Catholic church for generations to come.

No serious thinking person will deny that a measure of reform and renewal is needed to restore confidence and integrity to the Catholic community. What should we do? Where should we look? Can traditional roles and the wisdom they offer help us or must we change the church radically as we know it?

In Leadership in the Chirch, Cardinal Walter Kasper, (a distinguished theologian, Bishop and now President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity), argues that traditional roles properly understood can continue to serve the Christian community well today. He makes these arguments in a series of 7 essays that collectively ride under the title of his book.

In the essay "The Diaconate", Kasper reviews the history of the Diaconate noting its rise, its lapse after the Council of Trent and its renewal at Vatican II. Kasper calls for greater understanding and use of this ancient and important office to relieve priests and bishops of certain duties given the worldwide shortage of priests.

His advice and insights on priestly and episcopal office are the second and third essays. Kasper calls on priests and bishops to remember that they are representatives of Christ and servants rather than officeholders and power-seekers. If you want to know what should be expected of a shepard--be he bishop or priest--these essays are required reading for all.

The essay on apostolic succession breaks no new ground, nor should it. While it is an ecumenical problem, the recent ordination of a gay man as an Episcopal bishop makes a common understanding very difficult.

Canon law is for most an arcane topic and only a tiny fraction of laypersons have any understanding of its use. But this essay is important reading in light of the child abuse scandals and abuse of authority by some American bishops. Kasper rightly critizes its overly legalistic use since the 1300's. The true purpose of Canon Law is to promote mercy and justice. As bad as the sex abuse scandals were in selected churches across the United States, a strong argument can be made that some priests (those guilty of only an isolated incident many years ago), were treated unfairly. Canon law is being applied unjustly to them. What happened to mercy?

Most reviewers will seize on the famous essay number 6 titled "The Universal Church and the Local Church" because of Kasper's disagreement with Cardinal Ratsinzer regarding the relationships between the local and the universal church. Kasper questions Ratsinzer's claims regarding the degree to which the universal church is primary over the local church.

Finally, Kasper sums up with reflections on the future of ecumenism and its implications for Catholics, Jews, Protestants and others.

German theologians can be difficult to read but Kasper's writing is clear and elegant and Brian McNeil's English transalation from the original German is superior.

Walter Cardinal Kasper is the bishop of the German diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, and has been named to the College of Cardinals by the Pope. Therefore he brings a special expertise to Leadership In The Church when he examines problems in apostolic succession, the application of justice and mercy in canon law, ecumenical points of view concerning the future, and a great deal more. A welcome contribution to Contemporary Catholic Studies reading lists and reference collections, Leadership In The Church is commended as being an especially well-reasoned discourse reflecting a lifetime of piety.

When de Vinck's appreciation of his handicapped brother Oliver appeared in the Wall Street Journal, it resonated across America. His book describes the widespread response to the articlefrom the White House to families of handicapped persons. Although Oliver might have been considered a "vegetable" by some, de Vinck vividly conveys the enormous impact his brain-damaged brother had on him and his family during his 32 years of life. Included also are stories of three other families also enriched by similarly handicapped children. Particularly affecting is the eulogy for Oliver given by a Catholic priest, a friend of the family. De Vinck, who teaches at a New Jersey high school, offers inspiration and support in facing the mystery of human suffering.

A life-changing read...

In the early 1990's, Christopher De Vinck--an unknown author--wrote a short tribute to his handicapped brother Oliver. A friend suggested he have it published, so De Vinck crossed his fingers and sent it to the Wall Street Journal. The Journal published it, and the story resonated across America. People showered De Vinck with letters. He decided to write a book featuring the original story intermingled with the letters he received.

It is first a story of personalization: these typical American families were scarcely cognizant of the weak, handicapped, and needy in the world until they were unexpectedly thrust (through all variety of accidents and medical situations) into the thick of caring for them. Then it becomes a story of unlocking the love & compassion within all of us. Of revealing who we are, and who we can become. As one contributor in the book put it, "I, like my Father, could have been a shallow, hard, demanding, domineeering person. We could have been impervious to people's hurts and pains, but Paul brought a dimension into my father's life, into my life, which has given us an extraordinary balance." This is one of those books with lifechanging potential that will put everything back into perspective.

Powerful message

I read this book years ago. I loaned my copy to a friend and never got it back. I was glad to get a used one cheap and in good condition. It reminds us that the best measure of a person or a nation is how they treat the helpless in their midst.
