This text is a selection of studies originally prepared for journals and conferences. The chapter topics address selected and interrelated perspectives from cultural anthropology and the history of religions. These topics then demonstrate how Native American spiritual heritages are situated within the context of world religious traditions. All the chapters elaborate on this central concern by means of a wide range of specific examples drawn from selected Native American cultures.
It is a fundamental and universal characteristic of Native American cultures that "religion" is not a separate category of activity or experience that is divorced from culture or society. Rather, religion is pervasively present and is in complex interrelationships with all aspects of the peoples' lives. Each chapter focuses upon specific examples of this integration of religion, or the sacred, with daily life in the context of a particular tribal group.
These fundamental principles, expressed in different cultural contexts through differing formal expression, not only provide a thread of unity throughout the book, but collectively, also represent a model of the multiple dimensions of the sacred which come together in an organic interrelated manner in any one Native American culture

A gem of a brief introduction to the councils of the Church

This is a tremendous little book. So good, in fact, that I'm willing to overlook the author's occasional use of exclamation points (a major prose no-no!).

I appreciated the author's irenic, even-handed approach and his highlighting various, oft-overlooked facts and historical ironies, such as the theological dominance of the East in the early centuries, and the fact that those who hold to Papal supremacy (Catholics) have arguably been more vibrant and successful in conciliar practice than those who hold to a predominantly conciliar model (our Eastern Orthodox brethren). There is a welcome absence of smug triumphalism in Tanner's approach.

This is an accessible and wise short introduction for those wanting to look into these particularly definitive moments in the early Church. It would be a wonderful entree into a broader examination of conciliar history, for those whose interest it piques.

A Fantastic Introduction!

I first discovered this book when I was doing some research for a paper in my graduate Italian Renaissance class. This book was not a source that I was able to site much, but since I come from a Baptist background I was very unfamiliar with the Church Councils. This book does an excellent job of succinctly (only 119 pages) sumerizing 1700 years of conciliar history. For someone who was entirely unfamiliar with the subject this was essential.
What was invaluable for my research was the Bibliography! This was the jumping off point of my research and saved me many hours in the library.
This book however is not just for the non-catholic who is unfamilliar with the church councils. I found that just this short book gave me a better basic understanding of the church councils than the average lay Catholic.
I have recently reread this book due to appologetic conversations. Most christian faiths would be well suited to have an understanding of conciliar history since their faith either clings to, protests or denies the authority of the church councils.

So-so historical sketch of Christianity's general councils

This is book is an exceedingly slender paperback history of the Ecumenical Councils recognized by the Catholic Church. Father Norman Tanner SJ, a Jesuit historian and English translator of the councils, provides more a sketch here than a fully developed history. I prefer Christopher M. Bellitto's "The General Councils" on this same subject because it is better organized and more readable, but this little text is serviceable enough if you just want a taste of the topic without any particularly deep insights.
