O'Murchu Continues His Vision

Billed as a sequel to "Quantum Theology," this book is as refreshing as O'Murchu's other work. His argument for updating our understanding of the message of Jesus - catching up with Jesus - is necessary in our 21st century world. The message O'Murchu conveys is one which is in tune with other contemporary thought - living on a shrinking planet with diminishing resources.

The second half of the book, written as monologue/dialogue is a little tedious and sanctimonious but can be forgiven knowing what O'Murchu is trying to convey.

Saint Augustine, one of the greatest writers of all time, capable of unparalleled mystical insights and great Doctor of the Church, has nevertheless left us with a mixed legacy. With his doctrine of original sin and its seeming demonization of the body and emphasis on the shadow side of human nature, countless young Christian boys and girls have grown up nurturing a very unhealthy attitude towards the body in a persistent preoccupation with their mistakes (read "sin" if you must) rather than focusing on their--let's call it original goodness. Dear Saint Augustine, you painted Carthage red (and then some!), then went all holier-than-thou in your "Confessions." What brought this all about?
We may have an answer in "Catching Up With Jesus," by Diarmuid O'Murchu who takes on the good Doctor with compassion and teasing humor. Chapter 3, in which the author sets up an imaginary dialogue between Joshua and Augustine, is worth the entire book for its humor and wit.
This "story," as created here out of the author's imagination, gives us a Jesus who fits into the current quantum worldview, wholistic, and possesses, or IS, a "relational matrix." This last concept seems to be an original one by O'Murchu and is, in all honesty, hard to grasp, but refers, I think, to a God where heart reigns rather than mind. "This is not a God for devotional seclusion, for evangelical rhetoric, or for heady academic analysis. This is a God of engagement, participation, liberation, and compassion," he states on p. 39 in the chapter entitled, "Bringing Jesus out of Captivity."
Augustine was too much in his head, as O'Murchu has Joshua say in the dialogue mentioned above. And if Augustine should get out of his head and into his heart, then we should too in order to better understand this difficult but inspiring and often delightful work.

Timeless Treasure of Women in the New Testament

Woman Word is a treasure of Women's stories from the New Testament. Each woman is described biographically, then within context historically and according to her place within scripture. An inclusive lectionary reading of the scripture passages follows with an original psalm and prayer. The points for shared reflection accompanying each woman provide thoughtful reflection for solitary prayer or group discussion. The illustrations help to bring these women to life! I cannot recommend this book enough for those who are seeking to expand their relationship with a God who transcends gender and calls us to step outside the boundaries that limit our vision.

Another wonderful gift from a very creative woman

I have long enjoyed the creativity of Miriam Therese Winter, both in terms of music (I have an extensive collection of her albums in the old 33-1/3 RPM format) and her writing. I have reviewed her memoir, "The Singer and the Song", previously. It is happenstance that I acquired WomanWord at the encouragement of a friend, who is the facilitator of a scripture study I'm currently attending. Since we are in fact using this book as part of the class, I am not "done" reading it, but what I have encountered to date is exceptionally rewarding. The scriptural explications and re-translations to reflect the female perspective are extraordinary, and the illustrations are powerful. The questions that accompany each section are very meaningful and thought-provoking. This is another book that I have no intention of allowing to leave my library, except perhaps on temporary loan, and which I know I will reference and use on many occasions.

God Beyond Gender

If "Catholic feminism" (or "Christian feminism") seems like a contradiction in terms, it's safe to say that this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you're good to go with the Madeleva Manifesto (Google it if this is unfamiliar; the Manifesto is only a few paragraphs long), you are likely to find this book appealing.

Winter says in her Preface: "It remains for women to claim their place in the past and in the present. WomanWord offers a biblical basis for feminist hagiography. As we celebrate sisterhood, name our saints, give birth to our own psalter, we discover that the whole of our tradition is more than the sum of its segmented parts." (p. xiii)

You can find prayers addressed to Good Mother God, Nourishing, Nuturing, Mothering God, Warrior Woman, Godmother God, Grandmother God, Sister Spirit, Worker Woman God.

It may be that Miriam Therese Winter's long-term fame will bound up with her identification with the phrase "defect in place." Her book, Defecting in Place: Women Taking Responsibility for Their Own Spiritual Lives, quotes a woman who says: "I am still a Catholic and I refuse to be driven away from the community I claim as home."

Good summary of comtemporary moral issues.

Richard Sparks presents a summary of contemporary Catholic moral theology that is both traditional and contemporary. He addresses many pressing moral issues in a way that is faithful to Catholic teaching without sounding dogmatic. He also is very ecumenical in his approach which shows the common natue of Christian Morality on most issue (with major exceptions such as birth control etc.). It is an excellent resource for anyone who wants real answers to hard questions in a user friendly format.

I have thoroughly enjoyed using this book for a class I am teaching. I have found the author to be a very compassionate, human man. I think if more priests taught from this book, there would be more people in the catholic church.

A Tremendous Resource for the "Some-time" Counselor

As someone who often counsels as part of my job, and will be attending an upcoming Stephen Minsitry training, I rediscovered this book on my shelf, and appreciate it even more than on my first "pass-through" years ago. The authors celebrate the thousands (maybe millions) of people who are thrust into counseling roles on a daily basis, so they charge ahead and describe positive actions we can take to make our "supportive counseling" role work to the counselee's advantage. The authors have numerous descriptions of problem behaviors that provide a real reference for the lay person, but the real strength in the book is the care they take in illustrating the relationship between the counselor and counselee. The chapter on "Hard-bought Wisdom" is alone worth the price of the book. I'm glad to see that it is back-ordered; there's hope that it won't permanently be out of print. If you are a part-time counselor, I highly recommend this book.

Written that you may believe

The promise of the subtitle of this interpretation of the Gospel according to John speaks eloquently to what Sandra Schneiders has brought to life in this well researched theological work. As she has noted in the text, one does not simply read the fourth gospel for it is in interacting with it that Jesus becomes real. For me the chief benefit of immersing the self in Sandra's reflection and research has been a deepened experience of the Risen Christ. I have encountered herein a Jesus who is truly the symbol of the God I only begin to know.

Rigorous, Prayerful, Pastoral

I give this book five stars from every role I inhabit in my life.

As a Catholic priest I preach out of the fruit that this book has helped grow regularly. As a philosophy teacher I trust the insights Sr. Schneiders provides because of the evident rigor of her scholarship and her deep application of philosophical hermeneutics to biblical scholarship - citations of Gadamer, Ricoeur, etc. can be regularly found. In my own relationship with God I find Sr. Schneider's attention to the spiritual consequences of her scholarship deepen my own prayer life.

It is well worth the time of any person who is interested in understanding the Gospel of John.

Groundbreaking Scripture commentary

Sandra Schneiders is a dynamic teacher as well as being a gifted Biblical theologian and writer. Her refreshing commentary on the Gospel of John helps us see what very few male theologians have been able or willing to see. Her insights are backed up by splendid research and intelligent thought.Her exploration of the Samaritan Woman, for example , in the 4th chapter of John allow us to peer deeply into the real meaning of the text. This is not about Jesus' encounter with one woman. It is about the Johannine community whose members were struggling with their life situation, the tensions over roles for women and men , the meaning of authority in the new dispensation which Jesus has begun. Anyone seriously interested in Scripture should read this fascinating book.
