Unbelievably Brilliant! I wish I read this earlier in my life.

I started out with Huxley's Perrenial Philosophy and am 3/4 of the way through Huxley and God. The effect these two books have had on my way of thinking about most anything religious or spiritual, and matters of daily existence and reality can't be understated. If asked what my belief is about God, I would recommend that someone read both of these books. No one in my mind has written about God, Godhead, the Divine Ground and our times existant relation to that reality better than Aldous Huxley. I found my self completely awed by what and how he describes the things he does. He makes so much sense out of really complicated verse and Mystical thought, and always has really profound insights to all that he discusses, which is immense. I hope more people find these books and have the same appreciation that I do for Mr. Huxley. You are in for a wonderful read, one that will force you to stop, and make you think about and recognize the enormity off all that he speaks.

A Useful Tool

One former student of mine said, "The book is lame because its all about emotions". Another student said, "This book sucks because there's nothing theological about it." A third student said, "I missed the point." In following up with the students, I found out they only read the words on the page and didn't do any of the activities proceeding the chapters. If you fall into the category of simply reading the words on the paper than I say move-on and don't waste your time reading this book.

This book is meant to be used interactively and to wrestle with the content of the chapters using one's theological and spiritual framework. I use many of the principles outlined in the chapters 4-6 after several years of chaplaincy work.

By the way, if you struggle with exploring your emotions than I say buy two copies. Found this through the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia

I found this amazing book by way of reading up on Calvinism in the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia. The section on Calvinism begins with "No better account of this remarkable (though now largely obsolete) system has been drawn out than Möhler's in his "Symbolism or Doctrinal Differences."
Well, if this book gets such a good review from such a reputable source, then why haven't I heard of this person?
Problably the only answer to that question is intellectual laziness by myself and negligence by my professors. This is a remarkable book whose thesis is routed in the different confessionals understanding of the fall and original sin. Mohler argues that Luther and Calvin's understanding of original sin leads them to their positions, particularly in regards to justification. Of interest are also the chapters specifically on Menno, Armenius, and Swedenborg along with the extensive discussion of the Catholic/Lutheran/Zwinglian/Calvinism positions.
Also a great bonus is the introduction by Himes who places the book in its historical context and Mohler's prophetic positions only later vindicated in Vatican II (as the Tubingen school few out of favour around VI).
I think that Mohler should be read by every student of theology and should also take his rightful place with the ranks of John Henry Cardinal Newman and Etienne Gilson.
My only complain is that (so far I have had no problems with the binding, but...) the binding does seem weak and after extensive use (which I plan on doing with this book) I suspect that it might start to fall apart.
This is a must read for every Catholic interested in apologetics or theology. Maybe even more relevant today than it was when it was written.

Simple. Humbling. Transformative.

I read this for one of my seminary classes, and though it is short and simple, the meaning is profound. It's structured into three sections which are very applicable to any one studying ministry or actively in ministry. It's refreshing and a great reminder of God's promise to shepherds. Overall, it was very humbling to read to this. I recommend it to any religion or seminary student as well as pastor or church leadership. One thing though...I do wish it was a bit longer and would go into depth in certain areas. Regardless, understanding that it was written many years ago, the application stands.

Three Disciplines to Overcome Three Tempatations for Christian Leaders

Henri J. Nouwen's "In the Name of Jesus: Reflections on Christian Leadership" has been a best seller since its publication in 1989. Over 200,000 copies of this book have been sold to date. Nouwen, acclaimed as one of the greatest spiritualists of the 20th Century, packs a great deal of wisdom on leadership into this little book (107 pages).

This work is the product of Nouwen's reflection on whether or not becoming older and being a successful author and teacher brought him closer to Jesus? After twenty-five years of priesthood, he found himself praying poorly, living isolated from other people, and very much preoccupied with burning issues. Despite everyone telling him he was doing well, he felt something deep inside telling him that his success was putting his own soul in danger...the Spirit was gradually being suppressed. "I was living in a very dark place and the term "burnout" was a convenient psychological translation for a spiritual death.

Nouwen then moved from Harvard to L'Arche, to handicapped men and women who were, at best, "marginal to the needs of our society." There he found a new life, one which gave him new words to use in speaking about Christian leadership for the twenty-first century.

"In the Name of Jesus" addresses three powerful temptations of today's world - to be relevant, to be spectacular, and to be powerful; then offers three disciplines - prayer, forgiveness, and reflection as antidotes.

As an example, the first temptation, to be relevant, can be addressed through prayer. Prayer is critical to knowing the heart of God and developing a heart within us that wants to give love and receive love in response. In doing so, our need for relevance dissipates, replaced by a need to serve others, reducing loneliness and despair in the world.

The Christian leader of the future, according to Nouwen, will be a leader with outstretched hands - a praying leader, a vulnerable leader, and a trusting leader. And one that will give hope, courage, and confidence to the world.
