We're using this book as a supplement to our study of South America and tropical rainforests. This book contains drawings of 8 rain forest animals: Toucan, Howler Monkey, Sloth, Poison Dart Frog, Emerald Tree Boa, Green Iguana, Gorilla, and Jaguar. While the drawings and instructions are virtually identical to DuBosque's "Draw Rainforest Animals," Lee's book includes a full page of information about each animal alongside a (small) colour photo. A brief glossary and some drawing terms are included at the end of the book. These features are helpful for younger children (~6-8 years) who are starting to learn about exotic animals. In my opinion, DuBosque's book would be suitable for an older crowd or for simply focusing on art techniques rather than learning about the animals and their environment.
As mentioned in previous posts, the resemblance to DuBosque's book is uncanny. For example, DuBosque begins step 1 of drawing a toucan by stating, "Draw the horizontal branch. Above it, at an angle, draw a tilted overal, not quite touching the branch" (p.56). Lee's instructions begin, "Draw a horizontal branch. Above it, at an angle, draw a title oval, not quite touching the branch" (p. 7). Similarly, the step-by-step drawings are indistinguishable in my opinion. DuBosque's book was published in 1994 (Lee's in 2002). The concern regarding plagiarism held back my rating but this doesn't impact the quality of the book itself.

Extremely disappointed

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED
The book was listed as new. It was dirty and smelled musty when it arrived. I returned the book and expect my charge card to be reimbursed for the total amout.

These animal drawings are exactly the same as in Doug DuBosque's Rain Forest book. Get it instead. Lots more animals. Bigger pictures. I'm not sure how this book can exist.
