Discontinuity or continuity?

Thielman delivers again! Moving away from simply a discussion of Paul's view of the Mosaic law (which has tended to dominate recent discussions), Thielman turns to look at what the rest of the NT has to say on this issue. He again showcases his impressive ability to explain difficult concepts and trace complex arguments with seeming ease. Matthew, John, Luke-Acts, Romans/Galatians and Hebrews are covered. The title chapters by themselves give helpful clues as to how exactly Thielman sees the function of each chapter toward the question of interest: What level of continuity is there with the Mosaic Law now that the eschatological event of the death and resurrection of Christ has broken into history? Thielman finds both continuity and discontinuity, but (rightly in my opinion) concludes that the stress is laid on the discontinuity. For an overview of the NT's view of the law, and not just Paul's, this short book should be one of the first places to turn.

Schnackenburg follows the lead of the second-century theologian Irenaeus of Lyon in speaking of one Gospel in four forms. He describes a unity of faith underlying the diversity of the four biblical books designated as Gospels, but he refuses to simply iron out differences in the interest of a historical whole. He sees the four Gospels in historical sequence, with Mark originating the genre and providing a basis that is modified by Matthew, Luke, and John. All four Gospels interpret the historical record with eyes of faith, but the movement from Mark to John is a movement toward greater "Christological profundity." For Schnackenburg, the four forms are best understood, not as immovable pillars on which the good news is erected, but as streams that flow together to form a great river. Many readers will find that image appealing, and many will welcome Schnackenburg's lucid presentation of the often complicated relationship between faith and history. This is an excellent text to read alongside the large and growing body of historical Jesus research. After the two unifying introductory chapters by Rice (chair, ethnomusicology, UCLA), James Porter (Scottish ethnomusicology, Univ. of Aberdeen, Scotland), and Chris Goertzen (music, Earlham Coll.; Fiddling for Norway: Revival and Identity), articles in the Europe volume cover broad topics, such as European popular and art music and world and immigrant music in Europe. The geographic section explores the unique nature of individual European musical cultures as well as six transnational ethnic groups (e.g., Jews, Travellers) and 44 separate national cultures. Most of the 70-plus articles treat history, current practice, and scholarship, thus giving prospective researchers solid overviews and leads on individuals and institutions with expertise in each musical culture. As with the other volumes, an accompanying CD includes musical examples that are not available commercially. One of the best (Catholic) readings of Tolkien

This book contains profound insights into the theology and spirituality in Tolkien's books. Caldecott gives the background of Tolkien's personality, letters, excerpts from other writings in order to provide a clear picture of what's at work in the Lord of the Rings. The chapter "Behind the Stars" is among the deepest commentaries on JRRT's work as a whole.
Very fine. Definitely worth owning.

A Powerful Book

I was more than pleasantly surprised at Stratford Caldecott's The Power of the Ring. I began reading the book in order to become more formally knowledgeable about opinions surrounding Tolkien's vast work, and I finished reading the book for pure pleasure. Caldecott takes the reader through specific aspects of Tolkien's world in relation to Christian, and more specifically Roman Catholic, beliefs. He discusses not only themes in The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, but also the Silmarillion and other Tolkien essays as well. However, even the reader who is not necessarily familiar with the less-familiar Tolkien works will find this book accesible and an enlightening read. Caldecott does a superb job of not assuming the reader has absolute knowledge of Tolkien's work while still avoiding summarizing. He provides a perfect blend of Tolkien's own statements, ideas from some of Tolkien's good friends, textual evidence and personal theory to demonstrate Tolkien's more subtle themes surrounding light, death, imagination, etc. that Tolkien perhaps wanted to make in his work. I have gained a deeper understanding of and greater aprreciation for Middle Earth through the reading of this book. Any reader interested in learning more about Tolkien and his own thoughts on his series should consider reading this book, even if a person does not have Christian beliefs. The book will simply allow one to look deeper into Middle Earth and realize there is a lot more present in the many threads that may be sited upon a first, or even fifth reading.

Also, Caldecott provides a relatively short and yet intriguing review of the Peter Jackson films which was fascinating and also a good read for people interested in motivation behind certain film decisions.

One of the best

First, a heads-up that "The Power of the Ring" is really a second edition of "Secret Fire." The only difference I can find between the two is the addition of the discussion of the Peter Jackson movies in "The Power of the Ring." I didn't realize that when I bought the books and ended up owning both of them.

Stratford Caldecott is the ideal author for this book. He lives and works in Oxford as Director of the Chesterton Institute for Faith & Culture, is married with several children, and is a traditional English Roman Catholic, all of which is helpful for getting "inside" Tolkien's spirituality. He also has a depth of knowledge regarding Tolkien's works and an ability to write about scholarly subjects without seeming scholarly.

Although I believe only a Catholic could have written this book, I by no means think only Catholics will get anything from it. It's a book about the spirituality of one man - J.R.R. Tolkien - not about Catholic theology. It's simply that we needed a book like this written by someone who could understand Tolkien's faith from the inside in order to make sense of it for everyone. I'd recommend it for non-Christians who want to discover why they find themselves resonating with Tolkien's writing. I'd recommend it for non-Catholic Christians who have difficulty seeing his subcreation as fundamentally Christian. I'd recommend it for Catholics who want to possibly experience a bit of the Fire that's at the center of it all.

In my 39+ years of being an active Tolkien reader, this book is one of the few about him that have gotten me truly excited. It deserves to be much more widely known than it is.

A Failed Effort

Knowing as I do the great joy which comes from experiencing the fullness of God's truth in His Church, I was quite anxious to read this book. I had hoped that the author had somehow put into words the wonderfully awesome elation I feel as a convert to Catholicism. Finley's book, however, has been brutally disappointing as it is, at its core, nothing more than a call to follow one's self before God.
We are led to believe, for example, despite one or two qualifying statements, that the source of a sacrament is primarily something within man. In fact, the Sacraments are rivers of grace flowing from God to man, not vica versa. In a manner not lost on the truly informed Catholic, but highly destructive for all others, the Holy Father's words are turned topsy-turvy before our very eyes to give the illusion that the use of artificial contraception is not immoral. Finley wholly misses the mark in his sense of the liberation which truly does come from salvation by ignoring completely the necessity of obedience to God. This book reeks of the unmistakable odor of dissension.
For honest accounts of the true joy of conversion and repentance I recommend "Surprised By Truth", edited by Patrick Madrid, and "Prodigal Daughters", edited by Donna Steichen.

This book is not designed for use by the average 4th Grader. It is written at a 7th Grade reading level. It has good directions for building the model and enough information for your child to write a good report. Most 4th Graders will need help with reading the text and understanding what it says. Very disappointing to someone who wants their child to be able to read and understand the information.

Very nice for book reports

My daughter used this book for her book report for school. She writes this. All of the following information and lot of pictures are in this book. Fr.Francisco Paulo and Lt. Jose Moraga along with 16 other men arrived at the San Francisco bay to start work on the 6th mission named San Francisco de Asis. Mission San Francisco de Asis was built on an inlets border. A Spanish explorer named Juan Bautista discovered and named the inlet Laguna Nuestra Senora de los Dolores. Mission buildings were finished on September 1st. Dolores met with many misfortunes in about 1834. The design 145 ft. long, 33 feet wide, 26 ft. High; Made of Adobe Walls and tiles; No Bell Tower Walls - 4 feet thick. Built in a quadrangle style; Mission had little space for growing crops. Now referred to as Mission Dolores. Only church and part of cemetery are all that remain. Oldest building in San Francisco. Steel beams covered with cement were added to strengthen exterior. Most mission buildings destroyed. $2.5 million was spent on the Mission stabilization. Located on 3321 16th street San Francisco, California, 19114
