Finding God in Contemplative Prayer

Let's see, I ear marked a dozen pages and highlighted about a tenth of the text in the course of reading this book. I enjoyed reading it and can easily identify with Fr. Rohr's perspective. It is not a how to book, but deals with the relevant issues associated with the journey. Below are what I thought were some of the highlights of this book.
Center and Circumference
Pg. 19: We do not find our own center; it finds us. Our own mind will not be able to figure it out. We collapse back into the Truth only when we are naked and free - which is probably not very often. We do not think ourselves into a new way of living. We live ourselves into a new way of thinking. In other words, our journeys, around and through our realities, or circumferences, lead us to the core reality, where we meet both our truest self and our truest God.
Vision and Enchantment
Pg. 51: Religions should be understood as only the fingers that point to the moon, not the moon itself.
Pg. 55: Everything belongs and everything can be received. We don't have to deny, dismiss, defy or ignore. What is, is okay. What is, is the greatest teacher
Ego and Soul
Pg. 80: The contemplative secret is to live in the now.
Pg. 65: The present moment has no competition. It is not judged in comparison to any other. It has never happened before and will not happen again. But when I am in competition, I'm not in love. I can't get to love because I am looking for a new way to dominate.

When you "get" forgiveness, you get it. We use the phrase "falling in love." I think forgiveness is almost the same thing. It's a mystery we fall into: the mystery is God. God forgives all things for being imperfect, broken and poor. The people who know God well- the mystics, the hermits, those who risk everything to find God - always meet a lover, not a dictator. God is a lover who receives and forgives everything.
Pg. 149: This gift of contemplative prayer is not a way of thinking. It is much more a way of not thinking. It's not a way of talking; it finally moves beyond words into silence. It moves into the mystery that is too deep for words.

Take the good

While I suspect there are some glaring and substantiative theological differences between myself and Fr Rohr, there's an alluring invitation into a wider experience of God through prayer. The text often breaks down into a political apologetic, and he makes certain apparently soteriological applications that I am not comfortable with, but overall I was challenged to pursue a greater awareness of God in this world at the expense of myself, as an invitation to John 3:30 incarnation. Overall, it's an interesting philosophical exercise for those willing and able to engage some discussion on the edges of Christian orthodoxy.

A Contemplative Challenge

Fr. Richard Rohr challenges us all to stop and reflect and to be in tune with the Divine. Too often in our world we are overly busy. We do not take the time to stop and reflect, or when we do, it's not for very long. Richard Rohr not only delves into why this is important, but shows how this is not only a mandate for Christians, but for all people, whatever their religion. He approaches contemplation from an ecumenical and an interfaith perspective.
Sometimes the hardest thing for us to do is simply to slow down and concentrate on the present. Richard Rohr explains the benefits of this.
