Encyclopedic in coverage and comprehensive in scope, this reference work is "a record of first happenings, discoveries, and inventions in world history" and serves as a companion to Wilson's well-known Famous First Facts (5th ed., 1997). According to Anzovin and Podell (who, incidentally, are also responsible for the latest edition of Famous First Facts , Facts about the States, and other Wilson reference titles), Famous First Facts, International Edition was developed in response to suggestions from readers who requested that the format of Famous First Facts be applied to a reference book examining the world at large. Aimed at historians, researchers, librarians, students, and teachers, as well as the general reader, the book's content is accessible to almost any audience. The 5,000-plus entries are grouped under alphabetically arranged subject categories and, when needed, subcategories. For example, the subject heading "Food and Drink" is further divided into "Alcohol," "Coffee and Tea," "Cookbooks," "Dairy," and "Packaging," to name a few. Some subcategories contain even further subcategories. Entries are arranged chronologically within each category or subcategory, and each is assigned a four-digit indexing number, beginning with 1001. Length of entries varies from a single sentence (first espresso machine) to more than 250 words (first ball game) . There are five indexes at the back of the book, taking up almost half of the volume's total pages. These include a subject index (abbey to Zulus ) of topics mentioned in entries, an index by years (3.5 billion B.C. to 2001), an index by days, an index to personal names, and a geographical index, which is a listing of key modern locations (Afghani stan to Zimbabwe ) by nation, state or province, and city. The "How to Use This Book" page is helpful to readers not familiar with the intricate arrangement used previously in Famous First Facts .The editors acknowledge the research assistance of librarians and others in their effort to compile the data included in the volume, though no specific works, print or electronic, are cited. First scientific calculation of the Earth's circumference was made circa 240 BCE by Erastosthenes of Cyrene (present-day Shahhat, Libya), the Greek astronomer and mathematician. Erastosthenes used common spherical geometry to calculate the circumference.---he calculated a circumference of the earth of about 28,745 miles (46,250 kilometers), a figure respectably close to the modern value of 24,900 miles (40,064 kilometers).
First politician to offer a chicken in every pot was Henry IV (Henri de Navarre), king of France from 1589 to 1610.--He is reputed to have said: "I want my people to have a foul simmering in their pot every Sunday."
First ice hockey game played indoors was held in 1875 at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal, Canada. McGill University fielded both teams. According to an account in 'The Daily British Whig', the teams took time out from play to batter each other about the head and legs and smash the wooden benches, becoming so violent that "the lady spectators fled in confusion."
First language to have its entire literature available on computer was Yiddish. Beginning in January 1999, the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA. USA, digitized 35,000 books in Yiddish by running the pages through an automatic scanning machine, making it possible to reproduce any of the books electronically in 30 seconds.

A good research tool

A new title in the fantastic Wilson Fact Series, which is renowned for providing the small details of history. First Famous Facts (international edition) is packed with accurate historical information about the first time that just about anything happened on the globe. Unlike Joseph Nathan Kane's great American edition, however, the date information is a little lacking here. Even in relatively recent events, such as the opening of the English Channel Tunnel, often only the month and year is given. For those of you who need the exact date in which events occurred don't expect as extensive information as in the American edition. Nevertheless, I'm glad I bought it and it has already proved very useful.

An excellent reference work for public and school libraries, Steven Anzovin and Janet Podell's Famous First Facts appears in an international edition, charting thousands of discoveries, inventions, and events around the world. This takes the form of capsule entries in an encyclopedia containing over 500 firsts from hundreds of countries. An excellent library resource.
