Intended for both generalist and specialist, this volume strives to bring an "ideological approach" to the examination of the literature of 21 Latin American countries (including Puerto Rico) from colonial times to the present. The essays treat the national literatures as "internally coherent traditions," extending coverage to recent themes both social and literary. The General References section provides 44 annotated citations to monographs in the broader field; each essay in turn provides specific annotated references. The essays are more overview than analysis. Some are much longer than others (Mexico receives 75 pages, Honduras 8); but they are all readable and free from extensive jargon.
