Too much cultural relativism

I need some biographies of Custer to round out the family trip we are planning for summer 2011 - including the South Dakota Badlands. This book is not basic enough - I have children aged all the way down to kindergarten, and I would like to find just two or three books on the Battle of Little Bighorn and Custer that can do the job for all the reading levels.
I'm not wild about a book that considers that America's golden years are in the past, or that today's Americans are not rightfully proud of their country. That is the tone of this book.
The "Library of American Lives and Times" have published a great biography of the Marquis de Lafayette, but this book did not measure up.
***UPDATE July 2011: The book I ended up using with my family was Dennis B. Fradin's "Custer's Last Stand." I made a listmania list of the other books we used; the other very helpful book was David Adler's picture biography of "Sitting Bull". Our visit to the battlefield was amazing; it made it much easier to understand how Custer's attack fell apart when you see the deceptive landscape at Little Bighorn. The park service has done a superb job with the battlefield.
