Grade 9 Up. When most students consider our early military history, they generally think in terms of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. However, Gallay paints quite another picture. While the various European kings and monarchs vied for power and property, it was warfare that carried out the mission. Consequently the colonists were frequently under seige or invasion by one power or another. This one-volume encyclopedia broadly defines warfare to include the military and diplomatic histories of a great variety of American peoples. Much of the material does not appear in standard reference works. Geographic coverage is extensive, including not only the present United States, but also the Spanish Southwest, Russian Alaska, Canada, and the West Indies. The almost 700 essays, which range in length from one paragraph to several pages, provide a wealth of information on group and colony histories, people, forts, treaties, and intercultural relationships. Black-and-white reproductions of battle plans, maps, and some illustrations from very early publications are included. All of the entries are signed and provide references and cross-references within the volume. There is an extensive chronology and a very detailed index.
