About the Author
Timothy M. Gallagher, OMV, is considered to be one of the greatest interpreters of the spirituality of Ignatius of Loyola. He is a popular retreat leader, an Ignatius scholar, and a lecturer. He is the author of several books, including Begin Again, The Discernment of Spirits: The Ignatian Rule for Everyday Life, The Examen Prayer, An Ignatian Introduction to Prayer, and Meditation and Contemplation. He lives in Boston.

It's not a "How-To Read It" book but a "How Not to Become Complacent When Reading It" Book

I am a layman who prays the LOTH and have always been curious about how priests - among others - can pray the LOTH EVERY DAY without getting bored. (There are 150 psalms prayed over one month's time and then they are repeated.) So I read this book and learned some things which helped Fr. Gallagher and which help me. It, also, confirmed that priests are human, too!
It's a short, easy read. But remember that it's not a book to learn HOW to pray the LOTH. There are other books for that, e.g. Daria Sockey's book "The Everyday Catholic's Guide to the Liturgy of the Hours" , or "The Divine Office for DODOs" by Madeline Nugent. This book is about techniques and practices which helped Fr. Gallagher overcome complacency when praying the Office on a daily basis, year after year. He was very candid about the difficulties he experienced in the 40 years he has been praying the Office and I appreciated that.
I think the principal point Fr. Gallagher made in the book that helped him to pray the LOTH better and which he neglected to do for many, many years - despite being recommended to do so by a fellow priest - was to read the " General Instruction" to the LOTH, and read it prayerfully. It helped him a lot: "A prayerful reading or shared study of this document is, I now believe, the most effective means for growth in praying the Liturgy of the Hours." He does give other helpful suggestions in chapter 4, "Explorations".
Additionally, he regretted not being taught more about the book of Psalms - the principal prayers of the Office - when he was in seminary and recommended that we do so now. One of the books he recommended on the Office and which has meditations on each of the Psalms is the book by John Brooks, "The School of Prayer: An Introduction to the Divine Office for All Christians." I own it and recommend it, too. So does Daria Sockey. There is also a very good book on the Psalms by Michael Barber, "Singing in the Reign: The Psalms and the Liturgy of God's Kingdom" which I recommend.
As Fr. Gallagher wrote, before reading the specified Hour, we should remember to pause and recollect oneself. Become conscious of God's presence. And SLOW down when reading (praying) the Hour. After praying the Intercessions, add your own. If a specific scripture passage speaks to you at that moment, write it down. In the end, we are all human and sometimes - often perhaps - we read the Office in a quick, perfunctory manner. That's okay. God appreciates our effort even when that happens - perhaps even more so than when we are "feeling" His nearness.

Praying the Liturgy of the Hours by Fr. Timothy M. Gallagher, is a great encouragement! It's an encouragement for all the church to participate in this powerful and unifying devotion. Rather than focusing on how to pray the office, he reveals its great spiritual benefits to our souls and to the church. Reading his "Personal Journey" has moved me to persevere in the daily practice of praying the Liturgy of the Hours - without the anxiety that I will pray it less than perfect.
As always, Fr. Gallagher continues to feed our souls with his own personal journey."

Wish I had read this years ago!

Excellent, well written and very helpful book. I have been praying the LOTH as a Lay Carmelite for several years, and felt I was missing something in my prayer. Fr. Gallagher's book was exactly what I was looking for. As other reviewers have said, he explains his experience, both the good and the challenging, with LOTH. I was so inspired by what he wrote. He gives several ways to increase your understanding and appreciation of this prayer. I highly recommend this book! I only wished I had purchased it sooner.
